A safety net is much fairer than price controls on wages

We as a society have decided that a safety net should be in place to catch the unemployed and the poor, unskilled laborers. There is nothing wrong with that, in and of itself, especially on the local level.

In other words, we as a society have deemed it unfair to transfer that function onto a businessman. Businesses exist to make money, to offer the most demanded items at the lowest possible prices. They are not charities, yet I feel like liberals who say "higher wages not welfare!" or "walmart causes welfare use!" do not understand this. Those people truly think that businesses should exist to give their workers ample pay no matter the value those workers bring to a company.

My question to you, liberals: why do you think it is a business's job, and not society's in general, to help our poorest? It's morally lazy and selfish to get rid of your obligations to the poor by passing that duty onto an innocent businessman/business owner.

I don't think either should exist. I owe nothing to my neighbor and he owes nothing to me. If I want to help via charity of my own free will, fine. But no government laws should exist to transfer wealth in one form or another.

Why can't society tax businesses and use a portion of that revenue for the safety net?

Don't you see that these are 2 methodologies for the same goal?

That being state directed wealth redistribution.

Sounds like Mises was the type of absolutist who would fit in here with our resident libertarians.

How is that working?
Who determines the width of the safety net?
Who determines the definition of need/poverty?
Politicians who desire their vote?

We all exist in society. A safety net is absolutely necessary for the benefit of all who live here. Those who benefit the most from society's wealth need to and must help provide for those not so fortunate.

Businesses exist to make money pure and simple. As much as possible.

So where's the incentive for one to pick themselves up by the bootstraps to make themselves a more productive person if they can just sit back and proclaim "give me my MONEY"?

You put the emphasis on the wrong word.

It's "give me MY money".

And, that is the problem. Before the Great Society, people recognized charity for what is was and were grateful for those who had to work to provide for them.

Now, and in large part because of LBJ's and the Democrat's Great Society, it's an entitlement mentality -- bought and paid for with their votes (whether or not they actually cast it themselves) to keep these scumbag Democrats in office.

1. Our corporate tax rates are already among the highest on the planet.

2. Businesses don't pay taxes in the long run. They pass the cost on to the consumer.

It happens every time a Libertarian Party candidate gets a fraction of a percent of the vote.
