According to the Des Moines Register, the state's Department of Transportation is aiming to next year provide a free app that will store your license, for use in traffic stops and any place else you're asked to provide your ID—even when boarding a plane at an Iowa airport. Such a venture would make Iowa the first state in the U.S. to provide digital identification documents. Iowa is one of several states that already allow for proof of insurance to be displayed on an electronic device.

I carry my insurance from progressive in a pdf form saved in the kindle app on my phone. I recently had to show it to a cop that pulled me over and he acted like it was perfectly fine.

This was in New Mexico but me, the truck's registration, and my insurance are from Louisiana.

So when you show it to a cop and he takes it to his car to run your name, is that consent to search your phone?

The last time I got pulled over I couldn't find my renewed insurance and the cop suggested looking it up on my phone.

Meh.... Doesn't Iowa have a population of 43 people or something?

Also, I got pulled over the other day (got a warning, no ticket thank God for White Priv..); at first he asked for license, registration and proof of insurance.... gave him license and registration and was digging for proof of insurance (which was in upper console, not lower glove box), and cop came back and said, "don't worry about the insurance, I've already verified you (USAA)...... I'm thinking it is getting to the point that they know who we are and whether we are insured or not anyway.....

Couldn't you just take a pic of your DL and save it on your phone?

Louisiana is the twenty-fifth most populous state, Iowa is the thirtieth.

Cops have laptops in their cars that display that kind of information. They're able to see the same information dispatchers are able to see when they run your info. Cops (at least here in Arkansas) run your name through two systems, one is the National Crime Information Center (NCIC); the second is the state database (in Arkansas its ACIC).

Depending on the state, insurance companies may be required to notify the state in which you reside in your status as an insured motorist. If you're uninsured, it will usually return back as "unavailable" or "no insurance on record".

They're able to pull up your driving record, local and state criminal record, check the NCIC database to see if you have a warrant in another state, and view any warnings put on your record, whether its an officer safety warning, drug warning, or sexual predator warning. They're also able to run the license plate against the state database to see who the vehicle is registered to, they can check VIN and serial numbers to see if any part of a vehicle is stolen, or run a serial number on a gun against the NCIC database to see if its stolen. So yes, cops can essentially know all their is to know about you if they wanted to.

I showed my insurance on my phone one time. But I also said "Yes sir" to the female cop, so I still got the ticket...
