Korean brat shamed for being a brat

quote:

The former Korean Air Lines executive who delayed a flight because she was unhappy with the way she was served macadamia nuts apologized on Friday over the incident, which fueled outrage and ridicule in South Korea.

quote:

Dressed in black, Cho, 40, emerged from a black Hyundai sedan at a building near Gimpo International Airport. She stood before cameras but looked towards the ground as snow fell, her voice barely audible.

"I sincerely apologize for causing trouble for everyone. I'm sorry," she said

Her father is the chairman of the airline

quote:

"I apologize to the people of this country as chairman of Korean Air and as a father for the trouble caused by my daughter's foolish conduct," said Cho, who bowed deeply in front of media crowded in the lobby of the airline's headquarters.

quote:

"I am sorry I did not educate her well," her father said.

What does the OT think? Should A-holes be shamed this way? Is Korean culture better at demanding personal responsibility than 'merica?

Also WYHI? She is rich

If Adrian Peterson had gone this route, he would still have a job.

Do we have video of her shuffling backwards bowing her head up and down repeatedly muttering "so sorry, so sorry, so sorry"?

Local sales of macadamia nuts reportedly surged in the days following news of the incident.

Apparently what she did wasn't that bad. Maybe it was just the way she did it? She went off because they served them without asking if the passenger wanted the macadamia nuts. Apparently a procedure they have in place to avoid serving them to people with allergies.

This article makes it seem more like she was pissed that they were served in a bag instead of a dish.

I did not see anything about it being a procedure to prevent allergic reactions.

Saw it mentioned in a different article.

I think you are correct.

quote:

Cho screamed at the attendant and told him to bring out the company’s in-flight service manual so he could read the proper nut-handling guidelines.

She forced the plane to return to the gate so the flight attendant could be removed from the flight. No other flight attendant was available to replace the removed one, so the flight ended up getting canceled.

Because the nuts weren't served on a dish!

I read a real interesting book around the time of the tsunami about Eastern culture. It was talking about the whole shame (like our culture) vs shun (like this incident).

It also spoke about cultural pressure to not do anything to disrespect your family/heritage/community.

It was really eye opening and illustrated why there were no riots over there unlike Katrina.

Of course, this traditional culture is dying away with globalization.
