For the week of Christmas, the only days we aren't off are Monday and Tuesday. My entire team except one guy is taking those days off, so I am planning on not going in as well because there will be nothing to get done.

Is it wrong for me to take two sick days instead of vacation for those two days?

That's like asking karma to slap you in the face with ebola. You just don't do it.

Technically: yes.
I'd still do it though. Especially if your company is like mine and they're "use'em or lose'em" days.

I'm a pretty healthy guy though. I've been sick maybe twice in the past 7 years.

This is the case.

Nah, this is why companies should just give personal leave instead of breaking into two categories.

Unlike vacation time, accumulated sick time likely will never benefit you when you leave your company.

That being said, I personally am against using something labeled as sick time for something like this.

My wife however does this from time to time and calls it a "mental health day."

yeah, women look at sick days and vacation days and basically the same. when it gets down to the end of the year there's whole lotta sickness going on in the staff, b/c they have used all their vacay.

I'm not all for it either.

I wasn't even planning on taking those days off, though, so I don't really want to waste my vacation days on it. I only thought about it once I realized no one would be here. I can come in, but I won't be able to get much done.

Before someone asks why I won't get anything done just because people are gone, this is only the start of my third month. Im still learning a lot, and a large portion of the work we are doing at this time revolves around paperwork that requires reviewers and approvers.

Have been working for 21 years post college...have called in sick one day in those 21 years(June of '94). The company I've been with the last 17+ years give a bonus in December up to 48 hours if you haven't called in sick during the year. Starts knocking off 8 hours everytime you call in....comes in handy right before Christmas.

Yeah, they'll totally believe you were sick. I'd do it.

This is why most companies use PTO now instead of sick/vacation days. The sick day method penalizes healthy people and forces them to lie and use sick days that they have earned.

I don't have call someone and tell them that I am not coming in because I am sick. Every two weeks, I just have the option of using sick or vacation days if I didn't go in all electronically.

I would usually just let my team know if I wasn't coming in, but they won't be here. Even then, they don't care if I tell them why I won't be in. It's a very independent company as long as you get your work done.

I don't see where it matters. Both are paid days of not working. They should just call them personal days instead of sick days, sick days are playing favorites with unhealthy people.

Just get way too drunk each of the nights and use them for the hangover.
