If so was it a living hell? Some friends rousted me to take an overnight train to Chicago as opposed to flying. Now that the departure is near I'm starting to wonder what the hell was I thinking. At least we are flying back.

We took one from DC to NYC. No complaints, very relaxing. I've heard the trip up to Chicago is pretty neat.

Also took one from BR to Tuscaloosa for an Alabama game. It was one big party the whole way there and the whole way back.

I took one from Hammond to Chicago but that was over 20 years ago. It was a nice trip.

If you aren't in a hurry it's kinda cool, if there is some scenery and you have a cabin or good seats

Probably about 15 years ago from NOLA to Chicago. I was kind of young, but I don't remember it being that bad. We had our own cabin. I think it was an interesting experience.

ETA: I think flying is a much less pleasant experience.

Never had a bad experience with Amtrak. I take it pretty frequently from DC to NYC or Philly for work. They're generally very easy rides and offer much more space than planes.

The longest one I took was an overnighter from Charleston, SC to DC. It was an 8 hour ride so I just popped a sleeping pill and it was over in no time.

We're going with 3 other couples and we have 4 bedrooms. We aren't going with anyone that likes to slum it so I'm sure whatever they booked is top of the line, if that's even such a thing on a train. I have no idea.

We took the Texas Eagle from Marshall TX to St. Louis, can't complain a bit but we also had a sleeper cabin so we could shut door. Food was much better than expected.

Me and some buddies took one from Jackson to Nola a few years ago for NYE. Had a great time. Took a cooler on board and boozed it the whole time. Plenty of room and a nice change of pace

You guys will probably have a great trip. Unless the train breaks down.

Took one from Jackson to Chicago for a cubs game. We brought an ice chest full of beer. Got on the train about 5:30 Friday afternoon and got to Chicago about 10 the next morning. We had a great time.

Hope your bedroom is one with a bathroom, because the ones without are very small, like 4x10.

New Orleans to Chicago is great...You depart at 1 pm, and get to Chicago at 8 am. Just bring on a bottle of booze, get drunk and then wake up in Chicago...Pulling up to a view of the skyline and the Sears Tower is seriously one of my favorite views

I took a trip around the country almost 20 years ago, Amtrack was offering a deal where you paid about $270 to travel the country in a big loop within a month. Columbia was one of the hubs so we started off here, went down to Jax FL, then west through New Orleans/Houston to San Francisco, up to Seattle then back east through Montana, Chicago, DC and back to Columbia. We stayed with friends and relatives at stops along the way--we were able to stay at any one location as long as we wanted, the only requirement was that we had to complete the trip within a month. That said, I definitely got more sleep at our friends' and family's houses, sleeping on a train can be tough. Crying kids, cramped seating etc.

This was for roughly a month, so I was pretty tired of being on a train when it was done but for me it was a great way to visit a lot of the country. It wouldn't be too bad for a day/night trip.

Yeah it's great if you're not in a hurry. Definitely for a laid back, slower pace trip (at least arriving/departing)

My grandparents take a trip from New Orleans to Delaware once a year on an Amtrack, they seem to enjoy it. You could have probably bought a plane ticket for <$200 to Chicago, though.

I'm interested in trying it one day, how much are tickets to Chicago?
