really the interesting part of the saints free agency will come early i think.
I think theres a good chance we make some moves to lower our salary.
im talking paycuts(colston, jahri, grubbs, Drew?)

and cuts(colston, hawthorne, pierre)

i actually dont know what our fa crop looks like this year and im only vaguely familiar with what were paying people.

but i think were gonna be looking to cut costs come free agency

Saints won't spend money on a rb or a wr.

They certainly won't touch a Dez Bryant. Sean Payton would never. People say what about Shockey, Shockey was Payton's guy in New York. The Saints stay far away from these guys who have troublesome off field issues or diva like attitudes. If they had some struggles in college, sure the Saints will consider the guy, but not if it's in the NFL.

I don't see them signing a guy like Maclin or Cobb either with Cooks healthy and Stills returning.

I really don't see the Saints very interested in any of these guys any ways. If they want to replace Colston, draft D'haquille "Duke" Williams. He is RAW, but incredible talent. He probably needs to return his senior season though to get into better than 3rd round range.

The Saints don't have any concerning free agents outside of Ingram.

Goodwin will be a free agent, but probably ready to head a different direction. The only other 2 free agents of any notice are Cadet (which is meh) and Patrick Robinson.

prolly gonna retire even if we give him another year. like stinchomb. hang em up during camp

Cadet (meh)

true. like the dude. seems smart and versatile. but hes not fast.

Patrick Robinson

if hes willing to take peanuts, i say keep him. weve been shown how continuity benefits a secondary this year. Also like Tracy Porter leaving for 2011, that wasnt great for us.

Yea I think our team really wants this to be true and it was until recently. Colston, the other wos, even Reggie all seemed pretty selfless and bought into their roles without objection.
Jimmy and Ingram seem like the most self obsessed players the Saints have had since Joe Horn. And Joe was cool/funny.
Jimmy and Ingram showboat so dang much. And with Ingram it rlly ticks me off cuz hell start hootin and hollering over a 5 yd run when there is a play to be called, stfu and get to the huddle.
Like Ingram as a player a whole lot, honestly want him back. I think Jimmy is great on the field but an an achilles heel on the books.

People talk about how we suck at drafting, but lets talk about free agency. Grubbs was way too expensive. Jurys out on Byrd(we coulda had Aqib Talib).
And my opinion is that the Jimmy Graham deal is gonna hurt is in FA periods to come. You cant build an elite offense when a tight end is the highest paid athlete, its bull.
I'd love to sign Maclin. With Jimmys deal thats impossible.

We used to say we could sign high risk players because our locker room was tight.

That's clearly no longer the case. Our team is soft as frick.

The only one of those that I would really want though is Iupati. I wouldn't want them to spend big money on a free agent wr or rb. Junior ideally plays that LB/DE spot. Revis is getting older and I wouldn't feel that great about tying up a big contract in him. I don't know that much about Harris.

Loomis just kicks the can down the road. I think next year we are getting to the end of the road. The only thing Loomis is good at is managing the cap. He better figure out a way to pull some magic. Unfortunately, these guys that are old and should be cut probably won't because there is too much dead money tied up in them.

Only time will tell.

There are a few contracts that can be cut/restructured to free some money this offseason, my only two worries are-

1. That the money is used wisely. I loved the Byrd signing at the time, and am still optimistic about it, but in hindsight it probably wasn't the best use of that money with the other holes on the team, and how little cap space we actually had.

2. Whatever positions we purge, hopefully it doesn't come back to haunt us. Sure Vilma and Smith were past their prime and shouldn't be on the field anymore, and Harper/Jenkins were easily upgrade-able, but it's hard to say getting rid of that many vets at once didn't affect on-field performance. Grubbs and Evans are playing to the level that they are being paid, but if we get rid of one or both, how easy will it be to fill that hole both on and off the field? If Colston becomes a victim of the salary cap this offseason, assuming Meachem isn't back, is Kenny Stills ready to take the vet role of the WR group?

Only person worth keeping and asking to restructure is bolded above. The rest can take a long walk off of a short pier.

Colston - from being Mr. Reliable to Mr. Liability.
Jahri Evans - Possibly the worst starting player on our line this year. Age has skipped not doing him any favors to kicking him squarely in the arse.
Grubbs - Probably worth keeping at a significantly reduced rate. Not a restructure. Simply, hey, either accept a new contract or we'll part ways. Keeping him, in addition to having Strief, would provide some veteran leadership for Armstead, Lelito, and a newly-drafted Guard.

No the numbers speak for themselves.

Total Cap Numbers:

2013 - $121,650,716
2014 - $131,457,950
2015 - $160,010,991

2014 to 2015 is a pretty big jump. The projected salary cap increase is around $140. That's only a seven million dollar increase. They will have to restructure a number of veterans including Brees. Guess what that does? It kicks the can further down the road with more dead money and declining talent.

The below average draft picks over the last couple of years is really hurting our cap number.
