Have any of you done an on-site Exchange to Exchange cloud migration?

Was it painful? Smooth transition? Any caveats or tips? Did you follow any particular guide or was the procedure pretty self-explanatory?

I did it a few years ago. It wasn't too bad but how bad it can be is largely dependent on your particular environment.
Some Exchange cloud providers offer migration assistance.

We moved last year from on premise Exchange to Office365.
I used SkyKick to migrate mailboxes. Moving groups and such wasn't too bad.

Did about eight of them. Office 365 has a tool on the admin console that can ActiveSync to your onsite server and grab all the data. Still need to do groups and public folders manually. $100/hr if u need help.

We've done a bunch from onsite to cloud. Migrationwiz is the tool we like to use. Pretty good for migrating different platforms, exchange, Google apps, IMAP.
You can run a migration pass then flip the mx records. After that, you can run additional passes if new messages were sent/received while waiting for mx to propagate or if there are some messages that route internally due to an autocomplete in outlook.

Did it pretty recently. Set up a hybrid environment and started migrating. There was a hiccup or two that wasn't in documentation I was using, but other than that, relatively easy.

That's what I'm charging. I don't need to tack on your charges. I've been doing this kind of work for many years, I just haven't specifically done Exchange online, thanks for the offer though.

The biggest issue I ran into was cross-prem permissions. User on Office 365 loses permissions to another user still on prem. This is in a hybrid environment though. Also make sure Office is up to date on the latest service pack.

Plan, plan, plan, plan, plan, plan, plan, plan a lot, plan a ton, plan some more.
And don't forget, above all else... PLAN

How many mailboxes are you having to move?

Don't listen to this guy. Fixing things you broke is the best way to learn.

shite, when it comes to email, people think the world will end if they miss one email delivered or lose one from their mailbox. Nightmare situations can and will happen. Preparing for the worst may go unnoticed but it's better than losing a paying client in the private sector. I've migrated a thousand or so mailboxes, learning something new each time to make the process smoother. Just like the OP, I've reached out to others for help. Never wanted to put myself in a bad situation because I was learning from a mistake.

I was just being silly. I do find it to be a lot more fun to get in there and get my hands dirty. It's all about balance and knowing when you can push it and when you can't. Losing emails would be unacceptable, imo.

All good. My sarcasm radar wasn't working last night.
We deal with some needy, self entitled asses in this industry but they sure do pay well. When shite is working, everything's cool. The minute something doesn't work, even for just a moment, you would think the world is ending.
