Here's the quote from the article;

"Notes on the back of a copy of Les Miles’ contract while pondering that $1.25 million Michigan buyout clause therein …"

Anyone heard of this clause?

All I've heard is Miles buyout is North of 17 Million.

LSU buying him out vs. him buying out his contract.

Jesus Christ.

The higher number is if LSU wants to buy out Miles. The lower number is if Miles wants to buy out LSU and go to Michigan.

Here's how I look at this low buyout. It could be there for two reasons:

1. He wants the Michigan job or wanted it whenever the clause was negotiated and wants to make it as easy as possible for Michigan to hire him. It's pretty strong evidence that he would go if seriously offered.

2. It's a bargaining chip and he wants LSU to think what I just said. If LSU thinks this is evidence of his desire to go to Michigan, he could hold that over LSU's head when renegotiating his contract saying, "I'll go unless you give me a raise". He has received raises the last two times, so this could be the strategy and a damn good one by his agent.

eta. my point was this is a low number usually coaches have larger buyouts when they leave a school, unless I am mistaken. It seems to have been a small number for a reason.

His buyout is for Michigan only. If Miles goes to any other school the buyout is 0.

If buyouts are a significant factor right now then Les isn't a Tiger and he should move on. I'd be just fine with LSU letting him walk for free if thats what he wants to do.

The MIT professor, Gruber, is getting all kinds of flack for calling Americans "stupid." When he's right, he's right. Exhibit A right here in this thread.

Ok now that makes sense if this is true. I was under the impression all coaches have pretty substantial buyouts if they leave for another school. That was a topic with UF and McElwain.

He probably has a buyout number for another SEC school... or at least there should be. I could joke that Alabama's could be zero... and we would pay him if he becomes their OC. But of course there would still be an issue with recruits in that type of situation.

The bigger the coach, the lesser the buyout, save for special circumstances. Saban has no buyout if he leaves. It's the employer that insists upon it, and Saban just says "no". Miles allowed a buyout for U of M based on LSU concerns that he might go home, but otherwise there is none. Not comparable to McElwain, a lesser coach at a lesser program.

That's not how it works at all. I'm not sure what Miles' buyout is for other schools, but for Michigan, he'd owe a significantly lesser amount of money for LSU to leave. That's been his contract since day one.

The fail is strong in you.

His contract is easy to find on google. Only Michigan is listed under termination by coach penalties, and that is 1.25 million.

I could not believe that they wouldn't have a buyout for any other school, but yep--the contract says you're right. I thought there was a penalty for leaving for another school, and an additional penalty on top of the regular penalty if the school was Michigan.

LOL. No one has explained it correctly yet. All of us that know are just enjoying the fail.

I'd hate to ruin the half-correct guessing.
