I know everyone has been clamoring how FSU doesn't deserve to be in the NC picture because they'd struggled in tons of games, but those same people, especially tOSU fans are more than happy to proclaim how great their 2002 NC team was despite looking worse at times than FSU did this year.

Let's compare each season's close calls.

2002 tOSU:

at Cincy - 23-19
at Northwester - 27-16
at Wisconsin - 19-14
PSU - 13-7 (#16)
at Purdue 10-6
at Illinois 23-16(OT)
Michigan 14-9 (#9)

2014 FSU:
OSU (neutral site) - 37-31
Clemson - 23-17 (OT) (#18)
Notre Dame - 31-27
@ UL - 42-31 (#20)
@ Miami - 30-26
vs BC - 20-17
UF - 24-19
GTech - 37-35 (#10)

OSU played and beat 3 ranked teams, 2 top 20 and another top 10. They had 6 wins of less than 14 points including 4 of those against teams that weren't ranked at year's end.

FSU played and beat 3 ranked, two top 20 and another top 10. They had 8 wins of less than 14 points including 5 of those against teams that weren't ranked at year's end.

In the end, they are eerily similar, yet according to some including tOSU fans, FSU didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. Gotta love lack of perspective.

One glaring difference is that OSU's defense always looked good. FSU looks like garbage on both sides of the ball quite often.

According to what Ohio State fans? 13-0 gets you in every time.

Now the difference is that while the offense was inept at times that Ohio State defense was nasty.

FSU definitely deserves to be in the playoffs, but their #3 ranking is also very well deserved. They could be similar to OSU, but OSU was also very fortunate to win the national championship game. McGahee blew out his ACL and they for the benefit of a very questionable PI call. Good teams definitely know how to win, great teams know how to win and beat the teams they should handily.

McGahee blew out his knee in the middle of the third if I recall.

And Ohio State's defense was the reason they were undefeated. They were unreal together.

FSU doesn't have that D this year.

You forgot to mention 2010 Auburn, who also had a lot of close calls.

Ohio state has like 13-14 players drafted the following NFL draft just in 1 class so it was an extremely talented team.
