Are the normative cultures of black and white society in the United States drawing closer together at this point in history, or growing further apart?

Race defines people less than socioeconomic class.

A poor white male living in a trailer park has more in common with a poor black female living in a trailer park. They both would have very little in common with a black investment banker in Manhattan.

As someone who has spent my fair share of time around poor whites and poor blacks, uh, no.

Yes they do. They shop at the same stores. They drive the same economic value of cars. Their education is similar. They get the same cable packages.

As Richard gere said in the movie arbitrage.

What's an Applebee's?

If you know and have been to one, you share the same culture.

At face value you're correct but it doesn't mean they won't.

It depends.

White culture is rather diverse in reality. It encompasses a ton of different religions (or lack thereof), ideologies, political positions, etc. Black culture is a more identifiable idea set, although it isn't totally uniform obviously.

In some ways, they're drawing together. Clearly family structures are changing for white people, which doesn't mirror black families, but certainly upsets the traditional family notion held in white communities.

They wouldn't sit down and eat with the investment banker either, though.

I think even affluent whites and blacks, by in large, have a different culture. It can be an innocent as putting rims on $100,000 cars or as complex as political and religious leanings...but there is a difference. To that point, I think those differences have a propensity to breed resentment and misunderstanding - hence the topic and question.

To a degree, I concur.

But, I think DIFFERENTIATION takes place more at the "lower" end of the socio-econ scale.

i think poor of any race tend to cling moreso to some kind of clan or tribe identity, etc.

Gangs don't recruit in the tree lined boulevards, etc.

So, a skinhead, a redneck, a black gangbanger, a hispanic gangbanger, etc all try so desperately to be different, distinguishable, etc.

As one travels more into middle class, the more alike we become. Wealthy of most races are more alike than different. (Obvious exclusion: those that BECAME wealthy via thug and gang activity)

I'm much more like y'all than us. I have no guilt for that

Well, that seems to be just LOOKING for a difference.

That one guy is into golf while another is into sailing and yet a third is into flying, etc is not a "cultural difference". It is just a difference in interests / hobbies.

It may be a regional difference, too. Middle class black/white folks are pretty distinct culturally in Atlanta. I mean, it's not like we're from foreign countries, but there is a ton of self-segregation, ideological difference, prioritization differences, etc.

I agree. This is less obvious in most of the south, but it's really obvious after living in NYC for a while.

lol I don't know of any affluent blacks who put custom rims on cars. I'm talking about "real" people, not rappers several years ago when rims were a fad.

My young, white nephew in rural Arkansas, on the other hand, does have custom rims.

edit: I do agree that there are, generally speaking, differences between affluent people of different races. But it's not always true, and it depends on a lot of factors other than race, although race is a component.

Going back a few threads about class system ideas. The rich in power always try to divide the poor whites and the poor blacks so they can keep their elite status on top. Southern politicians years ago always told poor whites you may be poor but you are always better than any black. If the poor whites and poor blacks united it could shake up society.
