I think this is a far better movie than people give it credit for.

The father and son dynamic chokes me up in more than one scene. Reminds me of when my father was alive and it makes me miss him. I want to scream at Rocky's son, "Wake up. Your father is the best thing in your life. His love for you is unconditional! Never be embarrassed by that."

Additionally, beneath Rocky's "dumb fighter" outter facade is a man of deep wisdom. For example, that speech he gives the Licensing Committee after they threaten to deny him the ability to fight is classic. At first, his speech sounds uneducated and members of the Licensing Committee look confused and annoyed. However, by the time he finishes the speech, the committee is taken back by his passion and wisdom and you see them for a moment in self reflection.

When Rocky's son confronts him outside Rocky's restaurant to ask his father not to fight, Rocky's speech to his son about winners versus cowards is a lesson for us all.

There's are so many life lessons happening in this movie that onc could say that this isn't a movie about a fight or a boxer, but rather a movie about how to live life.

I saw it in theaters. I legitimately had absolutely no idea what was going on when he gave his "speech" to the board.

but by the time he finished, you were like, "frick yeah, Rocky!"

Rocky owned that committee.

By the time he finished i think the board was as confused as i was. They just went with it to get the old crazy arse man out of their room.

I think its underrated as well. Not that I think it should've won any awards, but it wasn't bad. Its a lot better than some of the Oscar bait that gets thrown out there every year.

I agree. This is a good movie. Better than I was expecting, for sure.

No need to hate on it at all.

Yet people call this one the worst in the franchise. I think it's one of the most personal and deep of the movies in the franchise.

Well, one thing I really respect about this movie is that it returns to its dramatic roots of the original and Rocky II.

You even see shout-outs to some of the side characters in the original, which was really cool.

III and IV were awesome in their own comic-book way, but they are a totally different tone.

Did you hear that "Creed" is in development? Apollo's grandson getting in the ring. Star-spangled trunks 4-evs, yo!

Mason Dixon was the third best boxer in the series behind Rocky and Clubber Lang.

Who?

V is the one most people call the worst. I almost disagree that this is underrated because I thought most people liked it.

Apollo Creed thinks you're wrong, but he loves you anyway.

Agree with everything here. Rocky Balboa was a better movie than Rocky 3, in a way, and that is saying alot. There wasn't a whole lot of depth to Rocky 3, fun movie, but that's about it. Rocky Balboa was a movie about life, it was sending a message, that life is a cruel, hard thing and if you let it it will chew you up and spit you out, and that all you can do is keep moving forward and never stop.

See, I still remember the message of the movie.

who are the people calling it the worst?

I usually see it ranked somewhere around 3rd best and it was reviewed fairly well.

As others have said, 5 is easily the one that gets ranked the worst by the vast majority of people.

the lack of a good training montage hurts its ranking

You may be right but the ending was a great way to end the series.

Ivan Drago was the best. He was robbed of a win vs Rocky. Travesty the ref let that fight go past the 2nd round considering I think Rocky took 234 head shots and only landed about 4.

The SOB killed someone for goodness sake.

I think Michael B Jordan signed on for it last I read, but I could see Jaden ruining this as well.
