I recommend this 18 year aged balsamic vinegar. I picked it up in Sedona AZ and it's the best I've ever tasted. Cost 19 .

I love and abuse my Cresuset french oven. Don't know what I'd do without it.

Lodge makes a very similar Dutch oven that is highly rated and a much lower price. In the past I've gone to Red Stick Spice Co. and put together a few of their seasoning blends, a nice olive oil or a balsamic. They have 18yr balsamic there by the way. It's fatastic.

Hit up TJ Maxx every so often. They usually have Crueset or Lodge at low prices.

I'm very interested in the difference between the Cresuset and other brands.

I have a large and small one of these (Martha Stewart):

.. And I use it more than any other pot I own. It is perfect for anything.

LC has a lifetime warranty...if the enamel flakes, etc, LC will replace the pot. LC is made in France (unlike Tramontina, etc which are made in China, so the bright colored enamels may or may not contain lead or other heavy metals). If you want LC for Christmas but don't want to pay retail, call the LC outlet store: (sorry no website) LINK
Outlet stores sell seconds, but they're perfectly fine to use. Most are indistinguishable from non-seconds...the flaws are usually minor & cosmetic. Outlet staff is friendly, has no problem doing phone orders. Often will ship free if you buy over a certain amount. Have bought lots through this store. They'll tell you what's on sale, what colors are in stock, etc, though it helps to have an idea of what LC carries before you call.

Saw a thing on truffles just the other day. Never knew how expensive those things were.

Homemade herb vinegar is easy & inexpensive, esp if you put it into recycled wine bottles. A branch of rosemary, a few branches of thyme pushed into a clean bottle, topped with some warmed vinegar...cork & make a nice tag w/a vinagrette recipe on the back. Buy inexpensive white vinegar and add a little cider vinegar for color & flavor.

For the proverbial person who has everything, a nice cutting board, a cheese knife/spreader, and a selection of cheese (one soft, one hard, one blue) is easy and always appreciated.

I give away lots of homemade bread at holidays. Unless you know the person is low-carb/gluten avoiding, bread is pretty universally liked. Pair it with a ramekin of honey butter, herbed garlic butter, etc.

The white truffle is a little milder than the black.. A little drizzle is excellent on salad, vegetables, eggs, hummus, macaroni and cheese, potatoes.. your finger.

Unless you're cooking on an episode of Chopped and drizzle it on anything, which will make the judges cringe and get you chopped immediately.

I am not a fan of truffle oil...it is often overpoweringly sweaty/foul.

You have to be very careful with it.. I agree. I have to say I'm pretty much a genius with it..
