Let's just assume that I have come into the situation to acquire some duck decoys (mallards) at a very good deal. We usually don't see a lot of mallards, sometimes very late in the year. How crucial is it to y'all to match to what you're trying to decoy in?

What are you shooting usually?

For the most part I would say it really doesn't make a difference

In the grand scheme of duck hunting cruciality, matching decoys to the species you are hunting is very, very low.

That would only be an issue with geese I'd imagine.

Up until about 15 years ago you didn't see a whole lot of anything but mallards, pintails, and teal. I've killed speckle bellies with nothing but duck decoys out and have shot plenty of pintails in spots with no pintail decoys out for example.

I match the hatch and it works well for me. I don't use any mallard dekes.

Paint em like pouldeau.

by the time they realize they are fake or not the right species you should have blasted them.

back in the day we used milk jugs mixed in with the dekes.

so buy cheap whatever when you can.

Yeah that's a good point and I've seen this work in other places too.

I don't think it is overly important, but I do think it can matter in certain circumstances. I do find that types of ducks grouped together makes a difference. Cans and dos-gris will come in to diver dekes in deeper water with less suspicion than a group of woodie dekes.

I have plenty of decoys to choose from so I tend to vary my spread as I think it makes it look a little more natural and I'll take all the help I can get. 90% of duck hunting though is being where the ducks want to be.

I've painted all mallards black. I have also accumulated close to 20 free decoys by hunting public land over the years. I've touched a few of them up over the years, but most of them are a dull pouldeax grey/black. All are texas rigged.

I think anything more is a bit overkill.

Go to Sandy Cove on Lake Fausse Point and you'll see plenty of coke bottles. I've seen mallards land right in the middle of them.
