Are the mobile versions of websites necessary?

Seem like phone technology is advanced enough to do away with mobile versions of websites. Also there is nothing more annoying than websites like Yahoo News on your phone...they don't allow you to switch to the desktop version. I just avoid Yahoo News and website like it.

I would say mobile websites are more necessary than ever.

The big thing now is, instead of making a separate mobile version of a website, people are creating 'responsive' websites. That is, one version of a site that adapts itself to whatever size screen it's being displayed on. It has nothing to do with phone technology, and everything to do with web design and development techniques.

And yes, I do think it's necessary. There is no one size fits all screen sizes design, and things will always have to be changed to better suit the device. On a large screen with a precise pointer, I want lots of information and relatively small click targets. On a phone, I want less information and larger click targets... I don't want to have to zoom and scroll around. You wouldn't chop down a tree with a scalpel, and you wouldn't perform surgery with a chainsaw.

I guess if I distill it down I'm just annoyed by websites that don't allow me to zoom in and out. I just avoid them.

Personally, I prefer the site adjust itself to make everything legible without zooming, but to each his own I guess.

And by the way, most mobile browsers allow you to request the desktop version of websites, so you can zoom Yahoo News to your heart's content.

Mobile versions of websites are necessary. Even on my 6+ I prefer TD mobile over the desktop site.

That said, many mobile websites have extremely poor UI and UX.

They are most definitely necessary. As others have said, responsive design moreso than Mobile specific. As varied as displays are these days if your website doesn't scale you're telling a pretty big chunk of your potential audience to go somewhere else.

Browsing the desktop version of TD on an iPhone 4s was a chore.

I'm all for adaptive websites as long as it doesn't forcefully water down the desktop interface.

Yeah, if a company jumped into mobile early and hasn't upgraded since then the chances are high that their mobile site is a useless shell of the desktop version.

Any website with more bells and whistles than TD I generally avoid. The simplicity in Chicken's design makes the browsing experience nice. I rather TD's desktop version on my phone over the mobile version. F' all that flash stuff and hover over links.

With that said, I have to admit I do like ESPN's mobile website over their desktop. I hate it when those videos play on the side of the desktop site when you accidentally hover your mouse over them.
