Thoughts on the victim's ability to pardon (see UAE killing of western teacher)

Ignorance on my part, but didn't realize this was formal in other countries. I know some will pay off the victims family for pardon, but to me this is a better approach. The crime is committed against a specific person. This would reduce our prison population and allow victims of lesser crimes a better avenue to be made whole.

"I can't believe I have the power to pardon, that is shocking to me. I don't want this responsibility," he said. "As far as I can tell, it seems pretty damning evidence, and she (the suspect) confessed herself. Ibolya, my dear ex-wife, and I do mean that, will not have died in vain."

In theory, I don't mind it. But, in practice, I guess I'd be concerned about pardons under duress.
Sometimes, perps get to witnesses by threats as it is. What happens if perps figure out how to threaten a family such that a victim gives them a pardon?

You've got to be kidding with any attempt to rationalize that. Leaving this decision in the hands of distraught family members is insane. In a civilized country this goes to an impartial judge and jury with laws to uphold.

End of debate.

Especially the "pay-off the victim" part. Talk about unequal justice for the rich versus the poor.

Islam still tries to live by the literal words of an illiterate 6th century brigand who copied bits and pieces from older religions. For all their faults, most modern Christians have managed to disregard the Stone Age nonsense about stoning gays to death, not suffering a witch to live, killing the men and women and livrstock of a conquered foe but enslaving the virgin daughters, etc. At least Jesus bringing the "new covenant" offers an avenue to modernize. Its hard to see anything worth emulating or preserving in Islam.

Pretty much agree, sf. The essence of Mohammad's ideology...is STATE FORCED submission to Allah/God/et al. And if the folk reject that model...they get the sword. We all know that can't be defended in a straight up argument. It's virtually immoral...not to mention impractical.

Which makes the conflict b/w modern Islam and the snake eating and fire worshiping ones hilarious.
All this lavish shite in Qatar and the other countries basically goes against their core principles.

If they "pardon" that crazy bitch, I guarantee you she will kill again.
This victim pardon would only work with people who are truly sorry for what they have done. It shouldn't apply to intentional crimes, maybe could apply to cases of negligence/manslaughter.
But overall, doesn't seem like a good idea.

Man, that is incredible they caught her so quick. I saw that video on LiveLeak the other day. Any idea how they managed to find a woman dressed in all black and figure out that was their perp?
@ OP - how is it that an ex husband is able to make that determination as opposed to her parents.
