i HATE seeing snakes in trees when I am hunting. Saw one a couple years ago (after daylite finally came) eyelevel with me about 8 feet away. Not really scared of snakes, just dont want them in the same tree I am in. At first sight I might jump.

where were you at to see that? That's a beautiful snake!!! As long as it's in pictures and not in front of me.

My farm in Costa Rica. I took the pic with a 100mm lens so I was about 10 inches from him. When my flash went off I backed away pretty quick.

That's a big snake right there. When I was a kid I caught one that measured 6'6". He was slithering along the ground and I heard the leaves rustling from about 30' away. I ran over and he was going into a hollow in the trunk of a tree. I jumped to the other side of the tree to surprise him when he came out the other side, waited a couple seconds, then didn't see him. Looked into the hollow and he was going up into the center of the tree, actually into the inside of the trunk.I grabbed ahold of him and we had a tug of war. I was about to give up when I started hearing crackling sounds (didn't want to harm the snake), but he gave up and I pulled him out of the trunk. Biggest snake I ever caught, though I caught a 6'4" a week later that was considerably thicker. We've also climbed trees to shake them out of upper branches. They do love to climb. When I lived in Braithwaite, my wife found one in the mailbox. She swore that I put it there. pm

Used to love catching big rat snakes as a kid. Biggest I caught was around 6'. I brought it home and kept it as a pet. It was so mean you'd have to hold its head awhile before it would calm down. I would put my ski gloves on and sorta box with it. Basically just waving my hands and having it rear up and strike.

I lived right next to Thomas Park in Lafayette. I would put that huge rat snake on the jogging trail and hide and watch the joggers freak out when they passed by and my rat snake would rear up about 2 feet in the air thinking the jogger wanted to "box". Being a kid was good times.

Back in the day there was a bike-a-thon in our neighborhood, and our street was on the route. We'd go stand in the street with our snakes around our necks, and all the girls would stop at the corner cause they were scared.

We did something similar to bitey snakes to get them to figure out biting did no good.

There are a few true outdoorsmen who aren't afraid of wildlife on this board.

this is clearly a rat snake, not denying that, but a few years ago on our lease in Mamou a guy killed a boa in the bayou behind the camp!!
Obviously a pet that was released, but dayum. this is Mamou!!

Rat snake

Great climbers when hungry, terrible when full. We had one of the biggest ive seen drop off the porch during a crawfish boil. Apparently he had gotten up into the attic area and got full on eggs or birds and couldnt climb down as gracefully as he climbed up

Looks a little thick in the neck to be a rat snake.

i had a shop full of rats where i kept all my hunting and fishing equipment. One day i was standing in the door when something fell out of the rafters and almost hit my shoulder on the way to the floor. 3' rat snake, which i caught then released back in the shop to hunt.

My wife caught me throwing a 4' rat snake under the house once. Told her it was the only time. I lied.
