‘You will not be arrested for using drugs’ Amsterdam's Drug Policy

Authorities in the Netherlands are warning Amsterdam tourists about heroin masquerading as cocaine, which has already killed several people and sent a number of others to the hospital. The campaign is striking because you'd never see one like it in the U.S.: "You will not be arrested for using drugs in Amsterdam," the fliers promise. Instead, they give information on how to receive medical assistance and how to keep potential overdose victims alert while waiting for help.

Dutch law distinguishes between "soft drugs," like marijuana, and "hard" ones, like cocaine and heroin. Possession and use of up to 5 grams of marijuana, and 1 gram of cocaine or heroin, is not subject to penalty. In sharp contrast to the U.S., where drug use has primarily been dealt with as a criminal justice issue (although there's some evidence this is changing), the Dutch approach emphasizes harm reduction and public health.
One of the drawbacks of a criminal justice approach is that the threat of harsh sentencing keeps many drug users from seeking medical assistance in the event of an overdose. That's not a concern in the Netherlands. The Dutch approach allows authorities to have a frank dialogue with drug users when new dangers arise, like the fake cocaine.

That's some serious income the govt would lose out on...

I'm all for it. If you want to sit in your bedroom and shoot heroin all day you should have that right. Just don't do it in public.

. Just don't do it in public.

The "War on Drugs" is one of the worst things in this country.

Funny when people want a hands off drug policy even though we all know those lazy drug using pieces of shite will need free healthcare when they OD and welfare because they don't want a job.

Darwinism in action for people that don't "gum check" that stuff first.

Yep. No more civil forfeiture.
According to D logic, that's a "cost" and proves libertarians are hypocrites about the deficit.

It's the same people who OD and use free healthcare in the Er's and don't have jobs now. So what would change other than not having to pay as much on the prison system.

There should really be another distinction for "medium" drugs because cocain is nowhere near as hard as heroin.

That's been the Dutch policy for sometime. A lot of the bars have signs in the window that say No Hard Drugs. They don't want to deal with junkies.

People cut their heroin with coke pretty often. Coke is cheaper. I failed a drug test for coke at my doctor once and I hadn't done coke in like a decade because of this. I was so pissed.

I love Amsterdam. The crime rate is low and everything is reasonably regulated. The problem is cops make too much money to eradicate fighting drug problems- think of the lost jobs.

Pragmatism is a good thing. It's a shame we don't use it more often in this country.

I don't have a problem with it. Not sure it would be a profitable business though.
