You can go around them. There is a path that puts you right on the other side of them closer to the cleric beast.

I would have a hard time describing my exact path, but my first encounter with them on the bridge I got my arse kicked, so the next I avoided that path all together. Eventually I came up the stairs on the other side of him right by the boss at the end of the bridge.

I haven't killed the first boss yet, but I've got to the point where all the dogs are in cages.

I can't remember the exact path. When you first come up to the bridge and the beasts are on your right, there should be a path you can take on the opposite side of the bridge that brings you back up and around to the other side of the beasts.
I think you have to go through that dark house with the four guys inside and then exit the door right at the bottom of the stairs.
Someone correct me if that sounds wrong.

yeah the dark house connects you to not only the gate back to the original lantern, but also the other side of the wolves.

I've already killed the wheelchair and found the other secret path out of that house that leads to the area where the dogs are in cages.
also just found where that path is that connects to the bridge where it looks like it's been torn up and it's just dirt. that leads back to the dogs in cages. didn't realize that dirt area was beside the bridge when I first found it.
this is hard to explain

I went through the door directly ahead of you as you enter the dark house (with the wheelchair guy on your left), then up the stair outside. This led me to a gate you can open right in front of the central yharnam lantern. If you go upstairs in the dark house and then outside you are led to the bridge on the other side of the werewolves.

I'm still not finding a way to the wheelchair house that doesn't go through the werewolves 
I got past the area where the troll is beating on the door, then to the top of the stairs where the werewolves are on your right and the path to the sewers is in front of you. but there's no path in that area that leads to the other side of the wolves. only way is to go through them.

When you get to the troll banging on the door, which way did you go? Did you take the hidden path on the left with the caged beasts?
