Ear tagging a pig

Things I've learned to this point.
You get one chance to do this out in the open
Make sure tag and punch are lined up.
When the tug of war begins between the pig and you clamped on to the ear, failure will occur at the weakest point.... The ear
Pigs ears bleed, ALOT
Greased pigs may be slippery but bloody ones are too
Good help is hard to find

I hate pigs. The pig barn at a 4H show is complete chaos.
So. fricking. Loud.

The only way I'll handle a pig is sliced and frying in a skillet

How's the project coming along? In regards to your issue(probably more the pigs issue now), it's a bitch as you've quickly learned. It would help to have 2 or 3 people to do it. Jam it up against the fence/wall with a couple pig boards, be quick as possible, if failed just let go and start over. Pigs are smart so he'll probably figure out what's up, you may need to snare it. Get earplugs.

I assume we'll be seeing you around the 4H barn this year. However, we opted for goats. Easier to tag.

You haven't lived until you've attempted to conquer a pig with sheep shears.
If you think their ears bleed a lot, you should see what happens when you hack a tit off.

quote:Placement can affect that a lot. Be careful not to punch it on a big vein. Stick it in the trough of the ear.

While in college a couple of buddies I hung out with decided while drinking some beer we should cook a whole hog for the Homecoming game. We drove 15 miles to the sale barn and bought the smallest pig we could find from a kid in the parking lot.
The pigs feet were tied together and pig was tossed in the trunk of the Honda Accord. We were driving home and the most awful squealing and racket I had ever heard was coming from the trunk.
We got back to the apartment and opened the trunk. That was one pissed off pig and he was no longer tied up. He jumped out of the trunk and took off. One of the guys ran inside and got a .22 rifle and the hunt was on. He killed the pig and no cops showed up. Little piggy was tasty but the Honda smelled like shite.
