The United States strongly condemns the barbaric murder of Luke Somers at the hands of al Qaeda terrorists during a rescue operation conducted by U.S. forces in Yemen in partnership with the Yemeni government," Obama said. "Earlier this week, a video released by his terrorist captors announced that Luke would be killed within 72 hours. Other information also indicated Luke's life was in imminent danger. Based on this assessment, and as soon as there was reliable intelligence and an operational plan, I authorized a rescue attempt yesterday.

I thought Al Qaeda wasn't a threat any more. Have we been lied too?

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that Somers and the other hostage, later identified as South African Pierre Korkie, were "murdered by AQAP [al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula] terrorists during the course of the operation."
I don't know how many more acronyms I can take.

Surprised they haven't resorted to this sooner. Why give the US a win?

So, we have known where this was for some time and did nothing about it. We wait for them to prepare his execution and then we decide to attempt to rescue him while they would have been on high alert and most expecting a raid.
This guy is an idiot.

Sounds like the guy was still alive when we got to him. I hope he was aware enough to know that we tried and that he didn't die in the presence of those bastards.

Definitely sucks, but if it was me I would much rather die during a failed rescue attempt than to be slaughtered like a cow kneeling on the ground in front of a camera.
Sorry for the family's loss.

Good on them for trying.
Hope they killed a shitload of those frickers in retribution.

Not sure how organized the central group that started Al Qaeda still is. But to think that random little groups that kidnap aid workers is the same thing as "Al Qaeda" from 9/11 is silly.

Politicizing the death of an American before rigor mortis even sets in.
Classy.
Classy.

No American warfighters were injured in the raid, but six AQAP fighters were killed, the defense official said.
Warfighters?

AQAP is hardly some "random little group". They have been around since 2009, were "blessed" as an AQ affiliate by bin Laden before his death, and took part in the Benghazi temporary mission facility attack that killed two Americans.

Modern term for 'combat troops'.

Yeah, almost as bad as just absolutely positively no-doubt-about-it needing all sorts of flag-draped coffin photos right up to 1/20/09
