So I know both Jack and shite about Apple. I am a PC guy (not here to argue the virtues of either platform) but I have been tasked with purchasing a 13" MacBook Air for a Xmas present.

Where is the best source/price on Apple laptops?

TIA...

I may be wrong, but apple usually regulates their prices. Can only get them at a few retailers. (apple store/best buy)

MacMall. No tax, free shipping. Often throw in free or next to free goodies like laptop bags etc.

its pretty easy to score a discount - lots of buisnesses have them, education discount, etc.

Last time I did it, they gave me about 5% off. I just told them I worked for the place I did, and I got 5% off in the store. YMMV

Your Welcome

Sorry I mean you're welcome....Apple refurbs are the best value money can buy for Apple products. They are practically brand new computers (new outer shell and batteries) and most are just customer returns or overstocked items. All come with a one year warranty and the option to purchase apple care.

MacMall.

Basically your best bet is to either 1) purchase from the Apple Store for Education at apple.com/store, which gets you 10% or so off of the price (depends on model). They do not check student status, at least if you ship to home. Or 2) purchase from MacMall, which has free shipping and doesn't charge tax, which saves you 10% roughly. I bought a MacBook Pro in 2009 from MacMall, I had no problems with them, except they did call me and want to verify with me my purchase by voice, I guess maybe to reduce credit card fraud?

Online from Apple. Customize and buy without ever leaving your home, no need to get out to an apple store and deal with those dorks when you don't have to.

It pretty does not matter where you get it, you are not going to see a big difference in price, if any.

I got the same call from Macmall when I purchased. They used it as an opportunity to try and sell some additional accessories, which I declined.

Other than that annoyance it was straightforward.
