Anybody have any recommendations? Using it most for movies and gaming but also a little music. Not looking for a ton of bass.

These two look nice
Sennheiser HD558
Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

770s are outstanding. What's going to be driving them?

Edit: If you aren't using an amp/DAC then I wouldn't get the 770s.

I have a Astro MixAmp, don't know if that's enough power. Also is there any disadvantage with going closed back? My fear is that the sound stage will not be as good, it would be nice and silent though.

Is this always a must when using high end headphones?

It certainly helps greatly, but it's not a necessity

it's all I got, is that not enough? I would be up for getting another amp at the right price. I use it mainly on my gaming console, I think the soundcard in my laptop does the same thing but I don't know.

My friend has the same amp paired with a pair of AD700's and they sound amazing.

I really want some help with this also. I have never had headphones that sounded very different.

My Q701s are amazing, but only if you aren't a bass head. They absolutely require an amp though. Not even my MSI MPower's built-in amp could get them loud enough.

really depends on what you want out of the headphones and what you are looking to spend. If you do not want to get yourself a decent amp/dac, you will be limited but there are still some headphones out there that sound good straight outta the pccard

that mixamp is garbage btw

good headphones. If you think your friends AD700 sounds amazing off his mixamp, the do yourself a favor and just go get the AD700

Is there a halfway decent combo under 100? I like rock with tight bass but the occasional boom.

Sorry for high jack.

Astro Mix Amp is not actually a proper headphone amp.

combo no, headphone yes
If you budget is less than $300 you should only be looking at headphones. A respectable DAC/AMP is going to run you atleast of $200 itself. There are many headphones that sound great without an amp/DAC so you should look into those

For around $100, definitely look into Blue's recommendation for the Audio-Technica ATH-M50

You should be able to find a deal on it for around or under $100. Wait for a good price

Check out Grado headphones. They used to be great headphones, the SR80 is in the 100 range and the entry prestige line SR125 used to hover around the 150 range.

I had some 558s I LOVED but I tore them up. I play drums and use my headphones to play along with while practicing. They ended up stinking to high heaven from all the sweat and eventually broke when I dropped/hit them one too many times. Great ones though.

I really liked the sound from the DT770 Pros but didn't want to end up with another pair smelling like shite. Ended up with the 770Ms. Similar to the Pros but they have non-cloth ear pads.

So ended up getting the 770's, they just haven't arrived yet. Now you guys have me thinking I need to upgrade my DAC/amp. Been meaning to upgrade for a while it's just confusing with so many out there. Trying to keep it close to $100 if possible.

Are there any good amp/DAC combo you guys would recommend? Need it to work with gaming consoles as well as my computer. Having looked at a lot it's hard to tell what's good and what I need. The Objective 2 seems nice but I don't know if it will work on both.

The astro mixamp is the only one that'll allow mic support for consoles, I'm pretty sure. Its your best bet for console use. When I had a console, I used my 770s, mixamp, and an antlion modmic as my setup
