When the hell did private photo sessions with Santa become a thing?

I'm not talking about when you take your kid to a studio for Santa pictures. Three women in my office were talking about their private sessions where they paid a few hundred bucks to have a guy come out and turn their garage or spare bedroom into a portrait studio for their kid's Santa pics. One said it was almost $1,000 for 3 hours. She showed me some of pictures and they were good and all but a grand? Wtf happened to going to the mall?
