I knew him from the 'will play any sucker in the country' video clip that went somewhat viral. That's about it. In hindsight, he was a good hire.

Indifferent.

He had beat OU a couple times with less talent, so it made it a little better.

I knew very little about him, so I had no opinion. After watching the first few games, I was VERY concerned. I mean ..... Who tries to stop an already stopped clock?

Petrino was definitely one of them, I remember his name being heavily involved as possibly LSU's next HC. Even back then he was thought of as a scumbag, primarily due to his stabbing his former mentor Tuberville in the back. Remember the secret unauthorized meeting?

Auburn University was trying to stab Tuberville in the back. Petrino is an a-hole but he didn't orchestrate that deal. He didn't even buy the jet fuel. Auburn proposed the deal and Petrino just listened. He didn't even take the bait.

Which goes to show you, pretty much any decent coach could come Into this program and be very successful. The program sells itself and changing coaches would not be the debacle that most of the chicken littles fear.

I'd heard of him, because he had beaten OU. However, I was very skeptical at the time, but one of my friends said that he was a good recruiter which made me feel better. He definitely hit the nail on the head with that. If someone would have told me back then that he'd win 100 games in 10 years, I would have been ecstatic.

I don't remember it being as negative of a reaction as most on here but I wasn't living in Louisiana. I guess it had gotten out early that it was going to be Les because I remember talking about it in Orlando after the Iowa game with LSU fans. While he was relatively unknown we were all pretty excited, most thought he would be able to flip Perriloux, which was a huge deal at the time.

After oklahoma state got destroyed in their bowl game and we hired their coach, I had a feeling it was going to be dinardo all over again as we hired dinardo right after Vandy had been crushed by the Vols

Very well said. I agree with your assessment entirely.

You're probably a good dude, but you are a legitimate re-TARD if you think this program completely sells and runs itself.

Miles was my #1 pick for Saban's replacement believe it or not... i always enjoyed watching those Okie State teams when Miles was their coach.

I was disappointed that we did not get a "name" coach.

Frankly, I was hoping for RC Slocum, which may have been the biggest mistake LSU ever made, but then again may have worked out beautifully. I was also hoping for Ferentz from Iowa.

Concerning Les, I was hanging on to the reasoning that he competed with Oklahoma, much the same as Saban competed with Michigan when at Michigan State, and that he would blossom at LSU, with no overbearing in-state rival for recruiting, etc.

And yes, I was very distressed after watching that "we're gonna keep comin' ... we'll play any sucker in the country!" video. I thought: "Man, this guy's crazy."

Had you asked me then, no way I would have thought LM would be here 10 years, and that things would have worked out as well as they have.

I knew some LSU bagmen at the time that were sick about the hiring of Les. They wanted RC Slocum or HD Nutt.

Jesus are you going to blame espn for our arse whipping on 1/9.

Because they wanted a playoff? So they put Bama back in the game? Give me a fricking break how about you blame Les Miles for literally changing nothing. Blame him for watching us run into brick wall after brick wall. Blame him for not giving Lee a chance after Jefferson was struggling.

The timing of Saban screwed us. Spurrier and Meyer had already found jobs and the main names floating around at the time iirc were Petrino, Del Rio, Miles, Tedford, Ferentz, rich rod. I was hoping for del rio or Petrino.

Would have been funny if yall hired Ferentz right after he bitch slapped Saban and LSU in the outback bowl
