My gf wants a cheap laptop for Christmas for basic stuff like web browsing, streaming movies and music, and basic word programs.

I'm looking in the $200-$300 range, and there are so many options I don't even know what to look for.

How do these options look?

Close your eyes and pick one.

Dell probably has the better support though.

Also thinking about this one. A bit more expensive, but I like the touchscreen idea.

Of the 4 in the OP, the one on the far right is slightly better spec'd because of the quad-core pentium vs. the dual core celeron. Single-threaded performance would be the same, multi-threaded would be nearly twice as good. Though I'm not sure why I'm even talking to you about multi-threaded performance for a web/basic media laptop at this budget.

So yeah, as stated, close eyes, pick.

Agreed. Actually the passmark score of the pentium is almost double that of the celeron. All other specs seem comparable.

Although my gf might not care, I'm interested to know if you don't mind elaborating? I'll be in the market for a new laptop soon also, with a bit of a higher budget.

Also, any thoughts on the second pic, the Acer Touchscreen?

It's essentially like the others, but has a touch screen. Personally, I don't understand the point of touch screens on these laptops, particularly when they don't "convert" to a tablet like the ultrabooks and others do.

I could elaborate for thousands of words, so a better question might be what you intend to use the laptop for. If it's similar to what your gf will be doing, you'll just get the benefit of more multitasking with an increase in CPU power and RAM.

So I can go "Look babe it even has a touchscreen!"

Her - "Oooooooh, fancy."

I actually use my touchscreen more than I expected. Occasionally try and touch the screen on my work computer before I realize... Same with my XBox... I'll start talking to another TV before I realize it won't lisaten to me.

Yeah, I don't see a need for it NOW while I don't have one, but I'm sure if I had one I'd use the hell out of it. Especially when I'm laying in bed.

I can't stand the touchpad anymore, it kills my hand. I bought a mouse because it was bothering me so much, I felt like carpel tunnel was in my future. Since then it's been fine, but when laying in bed I have to use the touchpad. I feel like I would utilize a touchscreen if I had one.

When it comes time for you to get a laptop on a higher budget, I'd recommend an ultra-book style, something where the screen folds back behind the keyboard to function as a tablet so you aren't reaching across a keyboard to touch the screen.

Yeah, I've been eyeing the Surface Pro 3.

Although I may be getting a tablet for xmas, so I don't know if I'd want 2.

I ended up going a whole different route and went with the HP Stream 13.

It seems to have really good reviews around the web, and although it has less power and storage, at least for what I know, than some of the others I was looking at in the OP, the fact that it comes with a year free of Office, and it's much "prettier" than the others is what will please her IMO. I don't think she'll notice the hardware deficiencies.

Please don't tell me I got a piece of shite?
