When Gordon talked to reporters last week, he acknowledged surgery was a distinct possibility.

"We'll see," Gordon said. "It's a full tear. I still have a labrum. But it's tough for any athlete to deal with that.

"If I keep on playing, it's going to be a lingering issue. This thing doesn't heal all the way correctly, I've heard, unless surgery happens. I don't know, it's still hard to determine right now."

Losing Gordon for the remainder of the season would be a devastating blow for a Pelicans team that already lacks depth.

But if Gordon, whose salary is $14.9 million this season, can't return this season, the Pelicans could petition the NBA for a disabled player exception. The exception would allow the Pelicans to sign a player to a one-year contract at a salary up to $5.3 million or trade for a player on the last year of a contract up to $5.4 million without sending back any compensation.

Surgery sounds like a better option for Gordon at this point. He's still dealing with lingering knee issues. Why try to play through this and deal with lingering shoulder issues? I know it will hurt his reputation as being injury-prone even more, but at this point I don't think it matters.

Hope he gets well soon, whatever he decides.
