no, they are going to ask that it be raised so the state can afford more police training.

It's gonna be awesome.

Everyone should protest that law.

And, Garner was killed by an overzealous cop who put him in a chokehold and ran him into the ground because he was allegedly selling looseys.

From what I understand, Garner broke up a a fight and the police came. Then, the police turned on him and started questioning him. Part of his frustration was likely that he did a good thing and now the police were going after him. The guy who videotaped the incident was visited by the police and indicted on gun charges. Maybe there is more going on here than meets the eye with the police?

It looks like Garner was selling loose cigarettes and the government wanted to "wet their beak" so they were eliminating competition with law enforcement. It is the Don Fanucci form of government.

quote:

"Young man, I hear you and your friends are stealing goods. But you don't even send a dress to my house. No respect! You know I've got three daughters. This is my neighborhood. You and your friends should show me some respect. You should let me wet my beak a little... Tell your friends I don't want a lot. Just enough to wet my beak."

Cigarette cost by state

quote:

1. New York $14.50
46. West Virginia $5.07

If you could carry roughly 1k packs of smokes in a F-150 with a camper shell, that's $10k - minor operating expenses in profit. Maybe an enterprising young Kennedy wil build a fortune bootlegging cigaretts.

This is actually a large revenue stream for many terrorist groups here in the US.

Taxation and laws like what New York has on cigaretts actually creates crime and helps crime organize, which leads to more nefarious behavior and more violence.

They talk about the "Broken Windows" theory, which I agree with. But, extreme taxation on a legal substance like this and this kind of policing to enforce it counteracts the benefit from Broken Windows and creates more crime and organized crime. Look at what Prohibition did. Then, you have violence as the underworld works out turf issues and you have corruption with the police as kickbacks are instituted.

Taxing cigarettes at 1000% creates MORE crime than it solves, costing taxpayers MORE money to go after the crime that it created. It is not good governance.

Does anybody know if a loose marlboro costs more than a doobie in NYC?

I would. That was extremely hard to watch. It is disgusting how little people are in proportion to the law in situations like that.

Damn I didn't know the cost of cigs was that much of a difference up there. You could make a killing selling them at 10 bucks a pack on the street after buying them for 5

This . Everyone believes whatever the Cops report. If the Cops report it is then gospel to many.

According to the cameraman the police were called because a fight/argument had occured & Garner broke it up.

Pollce get there & accuse the incredulous Garner of selling cigarettes ?

Cash. No taxes, or employee mandate. Sign up for welfate and obamacare subsidies. Retire after two years. The state of NY has given you a 200% margin. Pay off the right people. We give so many perverse incentives by the law of unintended consequences.

Wait a minute.

It is argued that current immigration policy causes illegals to die because they make dangerous journeys.

Why can't we apply that logic to cigarette policy?
