Could someone with legal expertise go into the details behind the federal government's jurisdiction into bringing civil rights investigations regarding these events? I'm admittedly not an attorney or constitutional scholar, so I'm curious about the technicalities of the legalities involved.

I'm not necessarily saying that I'm skeptical that they have jurisdiction, but I am curious where the federal government is given the power to do so. Thanks.

I'll give you the cliff notes as I'm about to go to bed.

Congress passed the Enforcement Acts during Reconstruction so the Feds could have another enforcement mechanism to ensure the rights of blacks in case the Southern states wanted to frick around.
