What everybody seems to overlook re: Miles to Michigan

I think people overlook one GLARING question: Is Miles at Michigan the same as Miles at LSU?
For ten years at LSU the knock on Miles is that he is an average coach and a great recruiter. Well, what happens if he can't recruit as well at Michigan as he has at LSU? There is a reason the SEC is the dominant college football conference. It's not because they "cheat", or pay their coaches more, or that the fans care more. It's because the highest concentration of great football talent is located in the south-southeast. Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, South/North Carolina, Georgia all produce a ton of talent. For example 56 of the top 100 players according to Rivals hail from those 8 states.
Throughout Miles' time here LSU's team has primarily made up of players from LA, TX, FL, GA. Can Miles get as many players from those states at Michigan as he has at LSU? I doubt it. Sure he would probably get some, but it's much easier to convince a kid from TX, LA, FL to come to LSU than it is to leave his family and travel hundred of miles to Michigan. Also, over the last 10 years we've seen more great players from midwestern states such as OH, MI, IL come south than I can ever really recall. For a guy that is not exactly renowned for his "X's" & "O's", it's probably a bit more difficult to win without the "Jimmy's" & "Joe's"
Miles has been great at LSU. But make no mistake, LSU (and where it is located geographically) has been just as great for Miles. There was a reason Nick Saban left a pretty good gig as Mich. St to come to a program that had only had 3 winning seasons in 10 years. He knew the great players were down here. I have no doubt that Miles could have success at Michigan. But I think people are fooling themselves if they think he can get the same number of ultra-talented players up there as he can down south.

It's personal to Miles and it defies logic which would be right up his alley.

Nah, I think Miles continues to recruit well at Michigan. Urban is doing well up there and Miles would bring an excitement level back to Michigan that hasn't been there in a long time.

Michigan is a top 5 football program all time. They can get players to go there.

He would do well up there running this style of offense in the cold against lesser opponents

Exactly. And I can imagine getting out of the SEC West ALONE could make going home just a tad more appealing.

I honestly think he wins the conference up there in 2 years minimum running his style of football.

And could wear his wind breaker and turtle neck on opening day and not look like a total dumb arse on national T.V.

I've been firmly in the "he's not leaving" camp but this is a great point.

Some of you guys act like the Midwest has no talent to recruit at all and the South is some kind of apple orchard of great athletes ready to be picked by any SEC coach.
1st off, Les is a very good recruiter. He's struggled at one position, but has been damn good pretty much everywhere else.
He recruited decently at OSU despite not much talent in Oklahoma and being second fiddle to OU in the state and like 10th fiddle in the Big 12.
Les can recruit better than Brady Hoke and there are tons of kids in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Chicago, etc that would appreciate the history of Michigan and go there. The school has been down, but is a historic powerhouse that's the dominant program in its state on top of that.
Les will also still have his fingers tapped into the South for recruiting purposes, and may do even better at Michigan over time. In the end, some of you act like he's going to Ball State or CMU if he goes to Michigan.
LSU is great, but historically it isn't near Michigan as a football powerhouse, and despite our obsession with the SEC, it is the best now, but hasn't always been.

Brady had a higher average recruit ranking than Les every year he was at Michigan

What you are missing is Miles' 9 years of recruiting inroads in the South he already has in place. Plus he got that Detroit on lock.

Ummmm... no. He had it higher 1 year.

Recruit average, not class ranking.
Hoke 2
Miles 1
1 year tied

I agree with most you said but he doesn't need a roster full of the same type of players he has here. Just looking at the SECW, I think Ark or aTm would both be in the top 5 of the B1G, where here they didn't crack the top 5 of a 7 team division. It's just a different animal when you talk about full roster talent.
For the record though, I don't think Miles is going anywhere.

When done and run properly, Mich and Ohio St(like currently with Meyer), experience talent edges over the rest of the Big-10 to degrees that not even Bama of current dynasty form has vs today's SEC West foes. MSU, Iowa, Wisc,etc..just cannot go toe-to-toe vs Mich/OSU in recruiting..PSU with Franklin may get there?
Michigan is beaten down currently, and not as good a gig as LSU, plus bringing in talent to more barren states/programs like Neb, Tenn, Mich,etc..in terms of those fanbases demand of meeting former excellence standards, is not as easily done as in past eras.
Still, if Mich makes a 'very quality' hire, it will be back to challenging OSU in three years.
