Splitting off from an earlier thread: a separate conversation on smart/thrifty international travel. Where have you been, how did you economize without hobo-ing it, and where are you planning to go next?

My last trip was Paris, where I rented an apartment through www.parisnicehome.com Pascal, the operator of the short-term rental business, was competent, friendly, English-speaking, and helpful. My apt had a BR, LR, small kitchen, and full bath; it was just off of the historic Rue Montorgueil shopping street. 160 euros/night, cheaper than a hotel room....plus I could pop around the corner to a wine shop, a fromagerie, a boucherie, etc.

$200 USD a night isn't what I would call thrifty. I'd start by going to places that are cheaper in general. Czech Republic, SE Asia, Argentina, etc.

If you want to REALLY save money in the long run, swing by Indonesia and pick up some of these.

My favorite resource for Italy is monasterystays.com Various religious orders operate guesthouses...some are as expensive as hotels, others are crazy cheap. I stayed in a convent in Florence still occupied by an order of nuns. Building was gorgeous, breakfast was included, and we got to hear the congregation singing all of the divine offices/liturgy of the hours...70 eu/night, double occupancy. Just 35 eu per person. Damn, Paris is expensive if 160 euros is considered thrifty.

Yes, Paris is expensive. A Best Western in the same area as the quoted apartment will run you $190+ night on sale; and the apt can sleep 3. The "thrifty" part is having a kitchen and washer/dryer. No need to dine out for every meal, and no need to check a suitcase or overpack since you can do your own laundry.

Sign up for credit cards that have huge sign up bonuses. Let them pick up the tab and then cancel the card without paying the fee or interest.

Then all I need money for is food and activities, as flight and hotels will cost less than a couple hundred bucks total for two people.

Ex. Doing a Peru trip:

50,000 American Airlines card. Need 65,000 miles to get to LIMA
50,000 British Airways Card. Covers cost from Lima to Cusco RT for two people (18,000 points).
Starwood SPG 2 applications net 50,000 points. Cover all hotel rooms for the week. Some transfer over to American Airlines to cover the 15,000 mile gap.
Annual fee on all these are waived the first year.

Total cost will be about $180 for the MSY to LIM trip. I think $10 for British Airways.
