Another SMBFOD.
I'm sure she knows the language, history ,political background, and is an expert on the U.S./Hungary relationship.

Donor payback, nah.

That's pretty standard procedure for appointing ambassadors. GWB was pretty notoriously bad about it.

I'm sure Hungary is now solid in the Obama camp. They'll be there when we need em'.

You could put Stan Laurel in Obama's suit and park him behind that desk...and do less damage to the National cred.

Live and learn.

Well she is certainly not stupid.

She graduated with honors from Sweet Briar College with a bachelor’s degree in political economy, a dual major in political science and economics. She spent her junior year abroad at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

All she has is a bachelor's degree

Does she have any experience?

Not really a surprise since Steelers group owner Dan Rooney got a gig as the ambassador to Ireland as payback for supporting Obama in 2008.

I wonder what Obama's next appointment will be, though... Bryan Singer being appointed ambassador to Thailand?

The first nomination or appointment of an openly gay man was when Clinton nominated James Hormel as Ambassador to Luxembourg. Hormel's qualifications were his family of Spam fame and he gave and raised a hell of a lot of money to Clinton.

Of course Jessie Helms, Trent Lott (who compared homosexuality akin to alcoholism and kleptomania) and the rest of the wonderfully open-minded Republicans in the Senate blocked his appointment. Clinton answered with a quick frick you and gave him a recess appointment.

It was things like this back in my youth that would turn me against the GOP forever.

Spam man!

Clinton also appointed Larry Lawrence as ambassador to Switzerland. As we all know, Lawrence went on to have his carcass excavated and kicked out of Arlington once it was discovered that he lied about ever serving in the military during WW2.

Regardless, most ambassadors are patronage appointments and you can't get up in arms about Obama continuing the tradition unless you're willing to point fingers at Bush.

Shirley Temple was appointed Ambassador to Ghana by Nixon and Ambassador to Czechoslovakia by Bush I.
