How useful are job recruiters? Do they help with salary negotiations?

Their is a recruiter with Robert Half that has been contacting me and throwing job openings at me pretty regularly. I haven't been looking to leave the company I am currently with until now and I am wondering how much it will help to go through the Robert Half recruiter in terms of time saved looking and filling out applications compared to doing it all on my own. Also, does going through a recruiter give you a better chance of a company accepting a counter-offer?

TIA

Recruiters get paid by getting you a job and a lot of firms use them to weed out unqualified candidates. Generally the recruiter will have knowledge about the company and how they interview too. It is important to ask the recruiter how many people they have placed in a specific firm, if it is a lot then the firm trusts the candidates he/she sends them and you have an edge. I try to only deal with recruiters me. GL to you

I had a friend who was a headhunter at one point.

He was paid a one time percentage of the candidates annual salary, so he definitly had motivation to have them paid as much as possible.

But alot of times the headhunters are just cold calling companies, offering candidates like yourself. Companies aren't, neccessarily, hiring them to recruit you.

I get calls regularly from placement agencies offering me physicians, mid levels, billers, etc... Except for the physcian, it's easier and cheaper to recruit for myself.

As far as finding a job, recruiters are certainly better than doing it on your own, especially because there are regularly good openings that are never publicly listed (my current job is one).

Don't really think whether you use a recruiter or not will affect salary negotiations, except that a company using a recruiter might be more in a rush to get a position filled and therefore more willing to negotiate if the right candidate comes along.

In a lot of cases, the recruiter has inside info. I was able to find out the salary range of the position I was going for. They told me what they normally try to pay, what I should tell them I expect, what to counter with to get what I want, etc.. I had a great experience and got exactly what I wanted and more. Most recruiters are getting a percentage of starting salary so they want you tomorrow get more

I believe he has personally placed within the company for the most recent job opening he has told me about. He gave me a heads up a couple weeks ago to tell me it would be opening up due to the person he placed there a few years back leaving.

Robert Half means that half of the jobs they're contacting you about are non-existent.

That's true for most headhunters IMO.

It's worth talking to them. I know a couple of people that got offers through recruiters, but some are definitely wasting your time for reasons I don't quite understand.

How do you know this? Not questioning whether you're being honest or not, just wondering if you did some research and found this out or if it's a well known thing they do

I agree there. Not so helpful in actually getting the job.

That was more of a joke, but I have definitely had experiences where a recruiter contacted me either by email or on LinkedIn, and when I follow up the job is no longer available. Most of the time, it was the next day.

Not specifically Robert Half, and this was 2009-2010 so take that for what it's worth. But it did seem to me like most recruiters were trying to collect resumes for whatever reason.

Got my current job through a recruiter finding me.

I think they're awesome. They will get you into interviews you're qualified for.

Sure as hell beats casting the wide net like you do after college.

I will have to polish my interview skills again. The only professional job I have ever interviewed for is where I currently work at. It's been awhile

They get qualified candidates in front of potential employers, that is all.

If you cannot interview well you won't get the job.

They are only paid if they refer the person that fills the job. So, they may be sending several candidates in for the same job.

if you are hired, of course they want you to make as much as possible. But, they don't want you to demand too much, and not get the job. handle the negotiations yourself.

AND ASK FOR AN EXTRA WEEK OF VACATION. I wish I had the last time I was in a position to negotiate. I asked for more money, which they quickly granted, I should have requested both money and vacation.
