I'm hearing rumors it's all smoke screens and that Foley is going to make a run at 3 guys with Holliday and McElwain as the fall backs: Stoops, Kelly and this is the big, but starting to leak out shot in the dark make him say no offer... Gus

Foley being lazy and hiring the hot new name again.

If this doesn't work out is he going to get canned? Or will he retire first?

Holiday would be a much, much better hire.

I like McElwain, but I agree, Holliday would be the better hire for Florida.

where are you "hearing" that? I'm somewhat connected to coaches in the south threw a couple of agents and a football ops guy I've known for years. Gus isn't looking to leave AU. Literally haven't heard anything to indicate he'd take the call beyond to get a raise from AU.

It'd be interesting to see Coach Mac at a big time job. I'd like it. Not sure yet if he's a big time P5 coach, but I hope he is.

I think he means Foley is gonna ring Gus at the house and make him say no. Same for Chip K and Bob Stoops.

That's what I've heard from Bulls, apparently there isn't much contentment with Foley's initial desire to just try and do the Muschamp thing again with a guy like McElwain, I have hard that if it's McElwain he's coming super cheap like 2.5 a year or so to make up for the buyout.

McElwain would basically be Foley admitting he made a massive mistake allowing Boom another year and thus had to settle for a second tier replacement instead of grabbing someone like Strong, Franklin or Peterson last season. Fun fact McElwain has as many bowl wins as Boom. I'd rather have a y of the the P5 possibilities: Rodriguez, Graham, Franklin, Strong, Mullen, Freeze, etc all would be much, much better choices than McElwain. Hell, there's a better option in the Mountain West in Bohl and possibly Harsin.

Hiring McElwain is settling for a poor man's Doc Holliday.

From what I have heard the buyout is negotiable. I wouldn't be super pissed about getting McElwain. Offensive guy with head coaching experience. Turned around a dumpster fire of program into a 10 win team. Currently has the 7th ranked passing game in college football while averaging 597.9 yards a game. He has got SEC experience. Ill put it this way, if this was the hire after Meyer left people would be happy.

First of all, Mac's buyout isn't as iron clad as you might think. When he goes to a new team, that team will not pay $7.5M to get him out of his contract. Second, if he goes to UF it will be for $3M or higher. I'd bet on that.

I think he is a good coach, but keep in mind he has Hart carrying the rock this year. That is a 5* running back vs those light D's out west.

McElwain is as boring of a name as there is, but if you look purely at his resume it is pretty damn impressive. He was an excellent OC on two national title teams in the SEC, learned under Saban, and has proven his HC ability at CSU. He is certainly better than hiring a coordinator. McElwain has moved up exactly as he should....not too slow, not too fast.

I really want Todd Graham. With a defense his system could do good things here.

Plenty of mid majors have transfer athletes who did not pan out at larger universities. One player does not make that big of a difference without a strong supporting cast.

If they went with him, I'd like to see what his staff at UF would be like.

JM isn't my first choice, but I don't think he's bad. Certainly has done good work at CSU.

Agree. He has Auburn in a position where he can do anything at AU that he could do at UF. The only scenario I could envision would be a guaranteed salary in the 7.5 mil range and for 8 plus years. Something crazy like that. UF could offer him an easier path to NC's in the easy east as well.

Mcelwain isn't not going to be the hire everyone wants but he could be good. It's a risk though and foley is running out of time to take risks. There just isn't an available star out there this cycle. We are going to have to settle and hope for a risk paying off sadly.
