Like tigerbtn08 said, its not really a company. Its a classification society that is appointed by the government to set the standards for building ships and other marine equipment/vessels/modus. They set the standards to be followed by shipyards/owners/etc to have a vessel classed under ABS. You build a ship and get the ABS surveyors to inspect the ship and they can classify it as being ABS classed.
I think they have a few thousand employees probably ranging from one end of the spectrum to another. Engineers, naval architects, inspectors, surveyors, etc.

Supposed to be a non-profit. Nothing but a scam. Acts like they are a regulatory agency when they are only a certifying authority.

I'd have to agree with Jones on this one.
However, I worked with them frequently when I was in DC and everyone I knew there was helpful.

it's the law for certain US vessels and barges to be classed by ABS...but yes..you're correct it's nothing but a racket

I know all about them, what do you want to know? They are involved in commercial ship building. Evaluate test and activation, QA and dock/builder trials.

If you are looking for that kind of work, I would recommend checking out MSC (military sealift command) also INSURV has offices in Mobile, Pascagoula and New Orleans.

Are you a mechanical engineer,marine engineer, or nav arch?
I deal with them a lot along with other class societies.
If you want to be employed by them (Entry) you will have tons of hours and paperwork. Forget weekend plans, that's the marine business.
There can be a lot of overseas travel.

Agree. But only when they know you are trying to bullshite them.
I dropped class on some passenger vessel I was managing. They operated domestic and the company was going through bankruptcy so I couldn't justify the cost. We were already paying the USCG to inspect us. Pissed off the local ABS folks but that's business.

Good place to work? How's the culture? Any problems with micro-management? How are the benefits?
