To Dr. Ray Watts:

As the college football season comes to a close and teams begin to measure their accomplishments, this should be a time for celebrating our progress and dreaming of what we can achieve next. Instead, our team, and all of the student-athletes at UAB, have been left to wonder if our future is about goals, growth, and vision - or if it is about quitting.

For several weeks we have lived and played under a cloud of rumors about the future of the football program at UAB, even as we fought to become bowl eligible for the first time in ten seasons. From our own athletic director and president we have heard no vote of public support. Nothing at all except for questions about whether we can perform at a 'level of excellence.'

We have been left to wonder about our future as, game by game, we got closer to accomplishing goals for our university that most considered impossible heading into this season.

So we ask you, Dr. Watts, where is the excellence in that?

While we have had no support from our president or athletic director, the support from everywhere else has been overwhelming. We have seen our former players rally around us to raise money and urge you to fight for UAB. We have seen the Mayor of Birmingham and the City Council stand in unison and speak out about the value of our program time and time again as they pledged their support and finances.

We have been uplifted by the business leaders in our community who rallied around us and told you that when we win, all of Birmingham wins. We have felt the continuous support from our fellow students, our professors, our alumni, and Blazer fans as attendance at our games grew almost 150% this year. And we have been driven by the support from our own coaches who have shown us the very meaning of the word commitment as they have fought for this university and for us even as their own livelihoods have grown more and more uncertain.

We are honored to play for all of these people.

So if everyone is for us, Dr. Watts, who exactly is against us?

Every one of us has fought for UAB football all year long. Many of us have fought for UAB football every day for the last four years. When we were recruited, we were sold on the very best of what UAB can be, and how UAB would in turn, make us our best. We believed in UAB then, and we believe in UAB now - which is why we will not stop fighting for what is right.

So we ask you to provide the leadership and direction we need. Stand up for your students and alumni. Stand alongside the businesses, leadership and people of Birmingham. And fight for us.

Or, with all due respect, look us in the eye and tell us you don't believe in us.

The University of Alabama should be ashamed. They have shown time and time again that they will stop at nothing to stay on top, even if it means hurting those in its own community within the State of Alabama.

They're operating at a multi million dollar deficit every year with no end in sight in a decrepit stadium that routinely draws crowds of fewer than 15,000 people. What you're advocating is a socialistic frame of mind my friend. Why should the university of alabama continue to subsidize a money pit?

This is garbage. Those players are getting screwed.

I hope the ones that wish to remain at UAB get to keep scholarships and the ones that want to continue to play football, find homes elsewhere.

I know absolutely nothing of the situation and only said it because I saw stuff like this on ESPN.com last night.

In short, yes, I'm trolling.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean what I said isn't true. I have no clue. Maybe it's true. Maybe it's not.

UAB football has possibly the worst fanbase and alumni support in the country. The people just don't care. Because it's an inner-city commuter university focused on healthcare, professional degrees, etc. They are already huge Alabama or Auburn fans, or they are from out of state to get a degree. Troy and USA are isolated from Tuscaloosa and Auburn, Birmingham is not. Their program only started 30 years ago and there has never any support. And it's not about the shitty stadium. Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and tons of other small schools in the Compass Bowl can fill up that stadium. Alabama can play MTSU and fill up that stadium. The only thing the UA BOT is guilty of is refusing to continue to support a program that is a pure money pit.

Yeah, I do know UAB is a big-time healthcare school. My brother almost went there for CRNA school. It's a respectable institution, but I do admit in my years of living in Alabama I always wondered how it ever managed to maintain a football program.

But, hey, they did have a good run years ago, and they did beat LSU on Homecoming Night.

Surely you're not this dense, Athletics are important at the University of Alabama, an SEC member, for students and the university's national profile.

Not so much at UAB.

So it isnt about the programs being a money pit then? It is about Bama caring only about how the Tuscaloosa university looks and does. Which is what we are all saying. Im not saying I am against this but it is clear this is the case

I did see an allegation that the students wanted to fund their own on-campus stadium, but that it was blocked by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees.
