Is it possible to do a really good Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy movie or show?

The 2005 movie had it's moments and was well cast overall, but, to me, it didn't have that Douglas Adams magic. I've never listened to the radio show or watched the t.v. show (I'm not sure there even was a t.v. show but I think there was).

I've read the books several times and love them. But I think so much of their appeal lies in Adams' turn of phrase. I'm not sure if they can successfully transplant that to the screen.

The BBC did a fairly good series.

The BBC television series was wonderful and Adams-approved (he even appeared in it in the 'Little green pieces of paper' bit).

The 2005 film was very enjoyable, although obviously a different experience. Sam Rockwell is impossible to dislike as Zaphod.

I can't completely disagree, but, honestly, this was about the best that Hollywood can do.

Would I like a high quality cable series do a multiple season coverage of the materials from HG through Mostly Harmless (or at least through LTUAE)? Certainly. But it would likely suffer the same fate, perhaps with fewer compromises, as the 2005 film.

It's tough to give any book the proper treatment it deserves in a hour and a half movie.

Damn near every book would translate far better if it was done in an extended tv series format simply b/c it allows for the story and characters to breath more.

I thought the 2005 movie was pretty good. The cast was great. (Although Robert Downey Jr. would have been the TITS as Zaphod -- they had wanted to cast him in the role, but couldn't insure him because of all his recent drug problems, so the part went to Sam Rockwell.) It's a shame it didn't do better at the box office, because I would love to have seen them make "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" if only for the scene with the talking cow.

I downloaded the first part of the BBC Radio Play from Audible. The story was great and BBC Radio did a great job of translating it to the radio medium, but the sound quality was terrible. I understand parts 2-5 are much easier listening.

I think I'm going to have to try to dig up the old tv show or he radio show.

To be honest, thought for years that the books came first. They were so well written. I didn't learn till later that it was (I think) the radio shows that came first.

Only book I didn't care for was Mostly harmless It was evident that Adams must have been going through a dark period. I wish he would have written another lighter toned book prior to his passing.

It's already been done really really well.

But I would love a remake with the same actors staying closer to the book than the radio episodes.
