Comparing IT job markets in different cities: whats your take? NO seems bad

How much of the job market is perception vs. reality. I've been to some parts of the country that say they are a regional version of silicon valley when reality is that actual technical jobs are sparse. I've been in others that I didn't realize had that many openings vs. applications (Atlanta).
Doing a dice.com search for "programmer" comes up with this many job listings for these cities:
Baton Rouge: 0
New Orleans: 2 (WTF?)
Indianapolis: 9
Charlotte: 20
Seattle: 24
Miami: 24
Sacramento: 25
Austin: 34
Portland: 36
Phoenix: 46
Houston: 51
Minneapolis: 64
Chicago: 89
Dallas: 90
Atlanta: 96
San Jose: 152
LA: 211
DC: 263
NYC: 332
Maybe some cities do better with the non-programming/creative side, so I did a search for "systems administrator."

All Owned and controlled by Indian body shops.

# of positions in New Orleans sucks and the pay range is lower than any of the major Texas markets.

Really not all that surprising since New Orleans is tiny compared to most of those cities

I never thought of system administration as being on the creative side, but whatever.
You might want to search for "tester" instead. Companies looking for testers are generally actively developing software products, whereas if you search for "programmer" or sysadmin positions that could be a bunch of law firms that just want you to put TPS reports together for the partners.

Nola is definitely better than BR. That's how bad BR sucks

The bottom line is if you want a career in technology (programming, IT, systems admin, network engineers, etc.) with top of the line pay and benefits, the best spot by far is the Bay Area. Texas (Austin, most specifically) is 2nd. From there, your other big cities are ok.. Louisiana is pretty much dead last.

Hulk, didn't you move to Austin and pursue your career there?

Raleigh got 36 and 82.

No, I am still in the BR area. I was pursuing Austin for a while, but got a promotion and am currently satisfied. With some more experience under the belt I may explore options later.

I believe New Orleans only has a very small start up scene and that is very recent.
Austin has a ton of technology employers so I'm actually surprised there aren't more positions available.

Being an advanced IT or Software Engineer in Louisiana just sucks in general. Tons of entry level, tech support, and/or data entry positions but nothing that can sustain someone in the 150k+ range unless you are in OIL and an exec.

job market in La. sucks no matter which field you're in.

Washington, DC metropolitan area should be included at the top. It's hardly "ok" around here.

Eh, Healthcare is nothing to sneeze at either, but as you said the higher paying jobs are pretty far up the ladder.

White collar jobs, yes. Blue collar, no.

As someone who is intimately involved with the IT industry... NOLA has everything that a "hotbed" needs, but the talent pool is very shallow.
I have a hell of a time finding PHP guys and god forbid I need a Ruby guy. They're effectively nonexistent here in NOLA unless the company has a relocation package.
IMO, New York, Chicago, Boston (academic), DC, and MAYBE Austin (up and coming) are probably the biggest "IT cities" outside of CA.
