Back into PC Gaming - Need Some Advice

Rather than fork out money for an Xbone, I decided to get my PC rig up and running and updated. I just got a 240GB SSD Drive, see the rest of the specs below:
Intel Core i7 950 @3.07GHz
14.0GB of DDR3 RAM
300GB+ SSD Hard Drive Space
GeForce GTX 550 TI (Best Bet for Upgrade?)
I'm looking for suggestions to increase my performance? My initial thoughts are to upgrade the GPU, but I'm so far behind the times on what to look for these days. I'd like to spend between $150-250 for a GPU.
I also have 2 more RAM slots to expansion, but I think 14GB is plenty. Any suggestions on how to get more from the system?
I'm also looking at new games to get into. I've got BF3 installed and I was thinking about getting Flight Simulator X running again. I average around 27-35 FPS with BF3 on Ultra settings, but I'd like to get into some good gaming before I slip back into WoW.

Yeah, I had 3 sticks at 2GB each, and added in two RipSaw 4GB sticks.
