Got a Nice Buck Today

Hey guys,
After killing a doe in the AR doe only season, I'd not been able to connect on another deer until today. In fact, I hadn't even seen a legal buck; in AR a buck must have at least 3 points on one side. This AM I found myself hunting from a tower stand we have on a long and wide power line. All season I've been trying to harvest a deer w/ the Speer 130 gr BTSP in my XP-100 7-08. At 8:35 AM I turned from the window on the right where I've seen most of the deer this season, to the window on left and saw a doe about 75 yards away, trotting across the power line to the north. She was already three fourths the across the power line and behind her was a nice buck. As I bleated, he was 3/4 across the power line. At the bleat he stopped and turned his head to me. He looked big through the scope as it was on 5X and he was only 55 yards away. All I remembered seeing was a lot of points and antlers well outside his ears. The cross hairs immediately landed on the rear portion of his lungs and about one third the way up. It was not the shot placement I like, but I quickly took it since it was a killing shot and I was afraid to delay as the buck would be behind some vegetation and out of sight w/ only a few leaps. At the shot, his entire body dropped low and his rather slowly ran the short distance into the thicket ahead of him. There was a small blood trail starting at where he was standing when I shot. The blood trail was rather scanty, but I followed it into the thicket and found him a short distance later.
Boy, was I happy! He turned out to be the biggest whitetail buck I've killed. He had 8 points, including a broken G2, and an inside spread of 20". Strangely, the distal part of the left main beam didn't grow. His live weight was 165#. He's about as big, both weight and antlers, as we normally see around here.
I last killed a buck 8 years ago. My hunting partner, my cousin, and I both decided to start letting young bucks walk and start killing more does.I hope I don't have to wait 8 years for my next big buck, but the wait was well worth it.

Nice and nice pistol set up. Been a few years from the last time I deer hunted with my .44 mag Blackhawk.

Awesome deer, and I've said this before but I think I want to get into this scoped pistol hunting. What's a good one to look into? I see yours is a 7-08, what do they make them in?

Just don't get one that looks as terrible as the OPs

I like his hairstyle! Nice!

Nice. There are very few people who can say they killed a 20" deer. Good job.

OP, congrats on a fine deer . Looks like a Burris 3x12 with AO on top. XP details : factory facelift (digi-camo paint job) or custom built ?

KR , the XP100 has been around since 1963 and chambered in the following calibers ... .221 Fireball, .22-250 Remington, .223 Remington, .250 Savage, 6 mm BR Remington, 7 mm BR Remington, 7 mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, .35 Remington.
Of course you can build a custom XP in most any SA cartridge . A 260 Rem or 6mm Rem would be poison on deer

First time I've seen a deer die from a paint ball gun. Congrats.

Got Blaze,
You know your stuff, don't ya. Correct on the scope. I bought the gun used w/ a purple synthetic stock. Took some grief from the OB on the purple gun. I did the stock camo paint myself w/ Krylon camo and Bulldog Arms stencils.. I painted the barrel w/ OD Green Alumahyde II from Brownells.

KR,
Got Blaze gave some good info so I'll just add to it. Of the factory chambers available in the XP, the 7 Rem Bench Rest, 7-08, 308 and 35 Rem would be best for deer hunting. Of those, the 7 BR is the one most commonly seen on the used market. The question becomes "How much recoil do you want?" My son wanted to deer hunt this week w/ one of my pistols. He shot my 7-08, but thought it recoiled to much. He used one of my Contenders that recoils similar to the 7 BR and was fine w/ it. OTOH, my son in law wanted to borrow one a few yrs ago. He thought the same Contender my son hunted w/ had too much recoil so he borrowed a 300 Whisper (AKA 300 Black Out) instead. Factory stock XP's start at approx $650.
Savage once made a bolt action handgun as well, the Striker. I've got one in 308 Win; it's one of my "go to" guns. The striker was also chambered in 7-08, 243 Win, 260 Rem (I think) and some of the short mags. Factory stock Strikers start at approx $450.
The best option for you may be the Thompson Center Encore. You can buy a single frame and configure it as a rifle, handgun, muzzle loader or shotgun, depending on the barrel attached to it. Factory chambers for deer hunting include the 243 Win, 260 Rem?, 270 Win, 7-08, 280 Rem?, 308 and 30-06. There are a large number of custom shops that will chamber an Encore in just about whatever you can think of. For one not accustomed to the recoil of these types of guns, the 300 Black Out/Whisper would be a good starting point. Although it's a good deer hunting round w/ range to 200 yards, recoil and muzzle blast are minimal compared to others.
You can find an unbelievable amount of info about these types of handguns at the Specialy Pistols website, especially the forums.
If you want more info, I'll be glad to share w/ you, either here or offline.
ETA: CVA also now makes a break action handgun, the Scout V2. It's on the Academy website, but I don't' know if it's really available yet. I forgot to add that the 44 Mag would also be a good choice for handgun hunting at closer ranges.
