I know about the panasonic one at bust buy, but I think I was warned that it was one of those cheaply made TVs.

Well, I'm currently looking at this one: LINK

But I read that the input lag is about 100ms for gaming. I just can't decide what to get. I see someone posted about 4k, but I read that they weren't worth it for 50" sizes. I also don't care about it being a smart or 3D TV.

I would look into this one but the 55 inch. It looks to be a good deal with good reviews.

Anyone who says that is over-generalizing. VIEW DISTANCE is the key. That said, it's likely that in a typical living room setup, you'd be sitting too far back to actually see the difference between 1080p and 2160P on a 50" TV. About 5-6 feet is the farthest back you'd want to sit from it, and about 3 feet would be the closest. That CarltonBale chart gets posted a lot here, and I'm basing it on that chart plus others that are generally of the same mindset.

They all of course assume 20/20 vision, so if you have better vision (e.g., 20/15), you'd see a benefit slightly farther away.

If your view distance, at minimum, allows for a coffee table and some walking room between you and the TV, a 50" is probably a little too small. In my living room, the farthest view is 10' away, and the shortest is about 6', which means I'd ideally want a fricking gigantic 70-80" 4K TV, or a more modest 50" 1080P (which I have).

even if you cant notice the pixel different from that distance, the 4k is still going to have a better picture so i dont understand this argument

Explain what you mean by better picture. That seems like a massive over-generalization as well.

What are you gonna watch in 4k if you don't mind me asking?

That question is not even relevant anymore. We all know there is limited 4K content out there. It's a lost battle. The view distance charts all assume that content viewed is actually the native resolution of the TV. If you're watching lower-res content on a 4K TV, a lot of them can upsample the content fairly well. Doesn't turn it into 4K by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still something. Of course, again that means nothing if you're sitting too far away or too close. Otherwise, any perceived improvement in picture is probably due to the fact that resolution is not the only thing that's better than your previous TV. LED tech, refresh rate, color accuracy, contrast, saturation, etc.

Personally, I'm not quite ready to slap an 80-inch 4K TV on my wall for my wife to watch 720P U-Verse.

Good to know

This Visio at Best Buy is probably the best deal on a 50" TV right now. Reviews are pretty stellar.

Netflix has 4k stream options and DirectTV has an agreement to start putting out 4k content. Also there is some app called Ultraflix that you can download and play content.

The set itself upscales everything. i mean i may be naive now since i dont have the tv yet and i just spent about a grand for it but from the demos in the store there is a clear difference between 4k and the other sets . The guys on avf forums know alot more about this then I do and from reading their thoughts everyone is pretty impressed with this 4k tv for the price.

UHD Upscaling

plus im upgrading from an old as frick 46" sharp, so might as well go with something that is future proof is the 4k does start to take off
