If you want to stay in Louisiana go to LSU.

Debt isn't an issue ONLY if you go to top 15 in nation. Tulane's ranking doesn't justify the debt when you can get a very good legal education at LSU. LSU's legal presence in La is much higher than Tulane so you'll only increase your networking by going to LSU.

If you're moving to the northeast and its down to only LSU and Tulane, Tulane is the better option.

I would go to LSU to avoid getting into debt.

This is LSU vs Tulane. not LSU vs Harvard.

This would be my advice from a neutral party that, to be fair, has not attended a single day of law school.

Tulane is a nice school, I'm sure but doesn't seem to be on the level where you should do anything to attend, to include piling on the debt.

I'm am, however, interested in Sabi's reasoning for this...

I went to LSU on full scholarship, and I chose it over Tulane. Go to Tulane.

Also, not sure what you made on the LSAT or when the next one is, but I assume you made roughly 165. If you were testing well above that, for the love of God, suck it up and take it again. I still regret not having retaken that exam after getting 163 when I was testing in the low 170s, particularly given the extenuating circumstances, which I won't get into.

Needless to say, had I gotten even close to my practice test scores, I would not have gone to LSU and I would not be in the same situation I am in now as I probably would have been able to get into a UT or a Georgetown, or had UNC, UW-Mad or Minnesota throw more money at me than they did.

Anyone who goes into debt for a non top-tier law school is a sucker, IYAM.

ETA: and it's debatable for a top tier law school.

Not really. A law school is a law school for the most part when it comes to the type of law you want to practice unless you are getting an LLM.

What would you recommend. Is it worth paying more for a tulane education?

I'm not going to be one of "those" LSU grads that come in and say, "Pay the fee, get the degree" - because that's not really accurate. There is a quality law school education, if you want it, at Tulane, Loyola, LSU or Southern - personally, if you're going to be practicing in Louisiana, LSU provides probably the best compromise in quality, value and focus on getting admitted to practice in Louisiana. Tulane and Loyola have built-in alumni support at many firms in New Orleans, and Southern grads are well represented in Baton Rouge, as well as city and local attorney positions and in firms around the state.

As for your choosing between LSU and Tulane, I was at a similar quandry - I ultimately didn't pursue Tulane because I wouldn't have been able to afford it if I was accepted (yeah, buddy I was poor AND I had a family already - wanna make something of it?). I was rejected by Southern (they didn't have all the facts, though) - and I went with LSU - never looked back.

ETA: If you wanted to pursue a specific area that Tulane has a special program, Environmental Law, or their combined JD/MBA program, that might change the calculus - but for a straight up JD with the intent to practice law in Louisiana, outside of the greater New Orlreans area - I would go to LSU (and - in fact, I did.)

If you are planning on staying in Louisiana, LSU all the way. No need to incur that much debt if you'd end up in the same place either way.

FWIW, it's probably not worth incurring that much debt if you plan on going out of state either (although Tulane will probably give you a better opportunity to get out of state). Friends who are working in Dallas and Houston are laughing all the way to the bank compared to their Ivy League co-workers who are in six figure debt.

I guess it depends on your goals and what you want your experience to be. If you're going to practice in Louisiana, pick any of the schools that are in Louisiana. Top of the class at Southern is more likely to get a job than the middle of the pack at LSU, so it's not like quality of education is really a priority for most firms.

The school has to be the right fit for you. If it's Tulane, go to Tulane. If it's LSU, go to LSU.

I just think making a decision solely based on tuition/loan costs can be a big mistake.

Get an MBA or MS in finance/acxounting instead, its cheaper, shorter and you have better job opportunities when you garduate (if you dont already find employment before). Not to mention you can potentially make 2-3x more money in a shorter period of time.

Law school is for the hopeless sheep that dont know what else to do with their shitty liberal arts degree. This isnt the 60s or 70s anymore where the degree used to carry some weight. Most lawyers are on par with insurNce salesman now except they make less money.
