Are these the wave of the future or just a fad like 3D? My dad just found an open box a 55 inch Smart Curved that is 55% off of new. He is wanting some opinions and called me, but I don't know that much about them. Can anyone edumacate me real quick?

They look cool, but I doubt they last. Most likely a fad.

I have the 55" curved 4k and really like it. the viewing angle is much wider than you would think it would be and the picture is great from the front. Is it better than any other tv on the market, probably not but I like mine.

I believe it to be a fad as well.
The future is 4K and OLED.

I don't agree with that. 3d was an in-your-face full push fad while the curved tvs are just an option. If every tv maker started making curved tvs then I might agree with you but that won't happen.

All that said, not sure what the benefits of the curved tv are supposed to be versus a regular tv.

What I meant was, it's more of a worthless gimmick than 3D, not that it was more prolific.

It may be a good buy. I just couldn't do curved tv myself. The way my living room is set up, people sitting on the couch would have a shitty viewing angle. Curved tv optimum viewing angle is less than 45 degrees.

Don't understand the curved TV. The picture is worse than a comparable TV that isn't curved.

My thoughts exactly. They were created to produce an IMAX effect. However, in a theater, there are no seats in the side of the screen. It just doesn't work. Total fad. This too, shall pass.

I agree fad...like 3d.....taken from Cinema settings where there is a huge screen to really benefit from the technology curved or 3d.

To me they do give slightly more of an immersive effect when you look at one, but I'd imagine it likely wears off some and is less noticeable as you get used to it.

I wouldn't call it a waste, just a personal preference.

I would only get one if it is 60 inches or larger. The way my living room is set up, the 46 inch I have in there is just right, and even people sitting in the recliners off on each side can still view it. Of course my spot at the end of the couch is almost dead center with the screen, but something curved in that size range would severely limit the viewing angles. I tried it out a Sam's a couple of weeks ago. Kept taking small steps to the side until I couldn't actually watch it anymore, and it didn't take more than a few feet from about 12 feet away.

I guess I don't get how it would be a gimmick. Unlike 3D, you don't need content to be produced for its use. If you like it, buy it.

If you read a quick article on the pros and cons you will probably decide not to buy one.
