Two cars from the same company were involved in a wreck at Bossier. Guy from the hood comes up to one of the drivers and says "it was not your fault but there is a $50 fee for testifying." Driver declines. Not realizing that both drivers worked for the same company, the man made the same offer to the other driver.

There isn't anything definite in that link that makes the story line they tell 100% undeniable. But that's pretty much what i imagine happened. I think no witness really knew, but they all came out and started storytelling and built a narrative that destroyed any credibility to the entire investigation. When the media is willing to rely on the testimony of people I wouldn't rely on to make a Big Mac correctly, you're getting into some ethical murkiness in your journalism.
