Last night was handled poorly by authorities in Ferguson

If I am a business owner in Ferguson this morning I am livid that an angry mob was allowed to roam free and destroy my property unchecked for an entire night. There had to have been some better way to handle it and stop protests from becoming violent.

You can place blame, but one area I wouldn't place it on is the officers.
They were human beings in a very tense and explosive situation. Pretty much a no-win for them.
Had they tried to defend those businesses using force, lord knows what would've happened.

I agree, they should have kicked some azz and shot the thugs setting fires and looting.

So the protesters have no responsibility and you demand a police state?

I'm not blaming the police officers on the ground. They were merely executing a plan. With this verdict looming I just feel like city officials, police leadership and the court could have coordinated this better especially given what happened the first time around.

Missouri's governor refused to deploy the National Guard.
Our POTUS empathized with the looters.
Besides, if you are a business owner in Ferguson, you didn't build that.
Someone else built that for you.
Easy come. Easy go.
It is what it is.

The government doesn't have many intended functions, but chief among their outlined duties is to protect property rights
yeah, it's pretty sad. But no matter what they do, they're raaaaaaacist.
I guess I feel bad for the suckers who bought the line that the police will protect them, they're just a call away, you don't need an AR, and AK, an FN, a pistol grip, a scope, a collapsible stock....noooooo silly, just call the police
too bad more people weren't like that pawn shop owner who moved...you loot, we shoot. During the intial riots, he and the other owners on the strip camped outside clearly armed and willing...no one fricked with their property. Imagine that

It's hard to predict the behavior of protesters.
I think they knew the decision though..they wanted people home, off work and out of school...
plus they wanted to let media prep.

I'm more interested in why the mayor ask the gov. for the national guard pre-riot and didn't get them. I'll go out on a limb here and say the governor was told by the feds not to. Now why is that?

Another lesson on why you can't trust government.
They take your money, promise protection, and fail to deliver.
Each citizen's tax money would have been better spent his own AR-15.

How?
If they use force, they're the bad guys.
If they don't use force, they're negligent but they aren't a villain.
They played it about as well as they could IMO. Blame falls on the looters.

I agree. They knew it would be a cluster**** no matter what. I think they realized that their best course of action was to let the people "get it out of their system" and not create any new headlines for the protesters to rally around and sustain this circus.

Of course the protesters have the responsibility to act like civilized human beings but the government is supposed to protect private property rights and they really did not seem to prepare for the worst last night.

The mayor said control was taken out of his hands by state authorities. Ferguson only has 53 officers available (not including 2 horses, 4 k9 units, and officer Ferguson) according to Wikipedia. Obviously not enough to handle what went on last night.

Seems as thought the cops are "damned if they do, damned if they don't."

You do know that some of the fires that the firemen were sent to had to return because of gunfire when they showed up?

Lives > property
Sucks for the property but if the cops were let loose from the start to go police looters in a more chaotic environment then the odds that people die goes up. I suspect many of the agitators wanted the cops out from their barricades. The protesters didn't police themselves well enough.
So yeah their duty is to protect property but it's also to protect its citizens and not escalate unnecessarily.
If the protesters were capable of doing so without putting firefighters at risk, maybe more buildings could have been saved. Once it became clear that there were too many savages to deal with, I can't fault the hands off approach.

It seems like it was handled differently than the way the police chief said it would be handled. Not altogether certain that's his fault.

Plus, the vast majority of insurance carriers will not cover your losses.

The annoucement should have been made at 8 am today. It'd have been "old news" to the looters once they woke up.
