I really wanted the LG G3, but from firsthand accounts it is a very delicate phone and repairs on it are super expensive and the deductible is sky high.
So I want a more rugged phone.

Deciding after reading reviews all week that the phone that is best for me could be the S5 active.

I need a phone that can survive a few drops and my S3 just after 20 months is starting to fail, and I really like the Samsung brand.
(failures are - it shuts off when battery is lower that 60% if you keep the screen on for over a couple of minutes. Probable- loose solder on pcb)

I previously had the iPhone 3s, the Moto Razr and then the S3. None of the other really could take the abuse and I don't like the clunky cases.

Also parts prices matter to me. I broke two screens on my S3, each cost me $10 to buy and replace. I had to change the battery out twice (again like $10).
So If I want a phone to make it two years and be a primary data lookup and business tool, is the S5 active the best for me?

I have it and love it so far(2 months). but have one gripe about an app that is probably not related to phone type. see my thread.

I've been looking at the active as well, what is the difference in the Galaxy 5S and the Active?

The deductible on any modern phone is going to be high. The S5 Active is really only more rugged in name. The screen is the exact same any any other modern device. The only way you can ensure protection is with a good case and maybe a tempered glass screen protector.

For a case I can't recommend enough Tech21. They're thin cases that offer amazing protection. For the tempered glass screen protectors, you can find those on Amazon.

All 3 buttons at the bottom are physical, not just the middle button. The fingerprint scanner is missing, and there are no contacts to add wireless charging in the Active. It is rubberized and pretty tough, pops hasn't been able to break his yet.

I've had the S4 Active for over a year and this monstrosity won't break. Can't tell you how many times I've dropped it on concrete or in water and have had no issues. Solid phone

I have the s4 active and recently broke my screen. That being said, I've dropped it without a case on concrete at least 100 times.

The biggest issue with the niche phones is that nobody wants to break the bootloader.

The phone's main attraction is its thicker, sturdier, more robust casing. Like the vanilla S5, it's dustproof and waterproof when submerged in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. The thicker case makes it "shock-resistant when dropped from four feet onto a flat surface," according to AT&T's product page. The S5 Active is all-matte plastic on the back and sides, and the corners of the phone in particular are larger and reinforced with small bumpers that should help keep the inside protected. The top, bottom, and side edges of the phone are covered with small divots that make the phone a bit easier to grip—it actually feels better to hold than the standard S5 despite the increase in size.

That's the difference from the regular S5.

Check the specs. I had an active before my g3 and the camera and processor weren't as good as the regular model. I gave my wife my old s3 when I got the active and the s3 was still faster than the brand New active. Camera sucked. Other than that it was a fairly durable phone and AT&T gave me enough on trade to pay for my G3

so the only things it is missing are things I would never use. I can deal with that. Now my issue is... we ordered three. A grey one a red one and what I thought was a green one. Come to find out it's cammo.

s4 active? The S5 active has the same camera ad the same processor as the S5.

I ordered them already, they will come in today via Amazon.

At&t will be new, but since I had T-mobile for 10 years, then Sprint for the last two, I think it will be an upgrade.

Yeah, I knew pops wasn't ever going to use the fingerprint scanner, and the 3 physical buttons are an upgrade in some ways b/c you have some tactile feedback when not looking or in the dark. The inability to add wireless qi charging was a bit of a letdown since pops is pretty rough with usb cables, but nothing major. Other than that, the phone is a galaxy S5.
