One player won't be able to take us there himself.

From what I have seen out of JJ, I don't really see him having "it" as a coach. He recruits very well, but seems to do little on the bench and doesn't seem to inspire the guys much. He will get this year and next year because of the #1 recruit in the nation. I hope he can change his style some, but after the #1 recruit leaves after his one year, there won't be anything to mask what's really happening if he doesn't change some things.

Simmons wont mean much if we lose the best talent on the team this year.

We also have no one else committed for next year despite having likely several spots open.

Exactly. NIT would be a realistic goal for this team. These losses this weekend will probably hurt those chances come selection time. Hopefully they get some breaks to go their way and they can at least be in the discussion of NIT.

It's very early in the season, so this team could still develop chemistry and do very well. I've seen a lot of basketball teams start off bad and catch fire mid-season and finish really strong. Jones has done decent in his first two years, but I'm waiting to be convinced that it will be better than decent.

The NIT is not what we're shooting for. Just being honest - nobody cares about the NIT. We have a Junior College All American and a couple of other guys who could be NBA players one day. That's a good enough nucleus with some coaching to make a run at the NCAA tourney. Mickey and Martin were both named Freshman All-SEC last year and Mickey made 2nd-team All-SEC and made the SEC All-Defensive team. He's only the 2nd LSU player ever to have 100 blocked shots in a season. So we do have some nice talent. Will they be coached up and developed even more - that is the question.

Hopefully this team is just struggling shooting the ball. You have to think that we will shoot better than 24% from 3.

I think Gray is struggling with the transition of a facilitator. Hornsby is pressing. Martin is a lot of showtime but not very tough.
TQ is improving. But our bench is bad.

Still it's early. Give it a few more games and see if any improvement comes.

I haven't been able to watch every game. From the 3 of them I have watched, it seems to me the biggest issues are: no defense and carelessly jacking up threes early in the clock, even when we are shooting ice cold.

I also think this team has tons of talent though and has a lot of potential. We just need to start dominating the paint more. Martin and Mickey show flashes of dominating low, and then will start settling for mid range jumpers or threes.

NIT is all we really have to look forward to this year. The tournament is out of the question already with no out of conference quality wins. SEC sucks, so there will be not enough quality wins from SEC play to make a difference. Not that we're gonna win that many games anyway. No consistent post scoring, and inconsistent perimeter scoring. Deadly combo.

This team is a .500 team.

With NO NBA tallent as of yet.
(Martin with the best shot if he stays in school 4 years and develops)

Mickey is not a team player, more of a whiner and ball hog then anything else.

I like Gray and Hornsby, think I see alot of upside.

And the rest of the players, well if there is talent , I haven't seen it yet.

The coaching is Very Average. Not what I expected when it comes to X and O.
Johnny Has a year left to make something happen.

I agree with just about everything you've said in the basketball threads. Which is good because it is frustrating to read inane 'the coach can't hit shots for them' posts. There are some good posters here, but the general basketball IQ is about as high as our basketball teams. I see people pointing out time and time again that they are just missing shots, its early, etc.

I could live with LSU missing shots, those are things that happen. But it seems like our philosophy is predicated on simply outshooting everyone (without any recognition that we are a poor shooting team). These is no emphasis on defense again this season (they are bad at every aspect). The shots LSU takes are terrible. They are taking something like 15 3's a game and are a terrible 3 point shooting team.

It is not just the two losses; LSU looks lost even in their wins. They were predicted to be a low seed in the NCAA tournament by multiple places this season (ESPN and SI being two that come to mind). This team has to make incredible improvements this year to make the NIT because they are flat out bad at this point. And many of the fatal flaws are things that were there last year as well. They are not a fun basketball to watch right now and the coaching of this group has been flat out terrible.

Poor coaching. They run around and run iso's way too much in key moments. Always have and always will under Johnny Jones. Great recruiter, not so good coach. kinda like that football coach we got but not nearly as bad. haha

you aren't going to win many games when you can't make 3s. its not like the shots they are taking are horrible either. we are missing a ton of open 3s. once our shooters break out of the slump we will be fine. the season for sure is not lost and I still think lsu will finish 1, 2 or 3 in the sec. for those who disagree feel free to tell me the sec teams that have impressed you the most so far.

Not much objectivity in your post. Please tell us why you think a certain Ayer is overrated?

The only way I see this team having much success is to play a LOT of press defense...Lots of trapping using their length to force turnovers...and then run run run! That means a lot of substitutions for fresh legs...but they WONT make it to tourney by playing mostly half court.
