If the deals were staggered by either begining or end I think it'd look better. Seems to me that it's going to cause some flexibility issues as both the guys approach the end of those deals. But I also, probably unfairly, expect panda to fall apart.

I like the HanRam deal, kind of meh about this one.

That's a valid concern, but he is only 28 and I've always heard he is an athletic guy for his size.
By year 5, I'm sure both of these contracts will be albatrosses for the Sox, but that is how pretty much all long term deals are. Just have to hope they provide enough surplus value in the early years to make it worth it.

I don't... for Sandoval at least. Considering he's on the right side of 30 and signed for only 5 years, and considering he's been relatively healthy, when you compare the dollars and cents to those 6-10 year deals that's been given out in recent years, it's actually a solid deal for both parties. Hanley on the other hand...

But again we've seen his slugging/ops decline each of the last 3 seasons when he should be hitting his peak. If he doesn't have an uptick towards an .800 OPS then is he worth it over Middlebrooks who is cheaper?

cant wait to see how fat he gets

In a couple of seasons the Sox will be fielding a team of DHs.

Huh??? Dude can't hit over .200 plus his defense is shaky at best. He was a good prospect but not a big leaguer.

I think so. But I think Middlebrooks is really bad. Definitely not a regular.

Panda's postseason numbers and being a "winner" made him a lot of money

I'd be very surprised if the analytically inclined Sox front office put too much stock into that.

Dude can't hit over .200
quote:-1.0 WAR defensively vs Panda with 0.9 so that is splitting hairs since neither is going to win you a gold glove
plus his defense
and one is going to cost you 18m less.... Middlebrooks is only 25 so he has time still.... He could be a .220 hitter with power who knows

Id love to know which analytics they are using that says Pablo is worth $20m a year?
3 trips to the playoffs, 3 WS wins. .344/.935 in the playoffs. Safe to say that's probably good for an extra $5m per year for the Panda. There arent any numbers that says he is a $20m player otherwise

The nickname alone is worth 2m

1 WAR goes for around $7 million on average in the free agent market. Give or take a little bit. Pablo is coming off a 3 win season. Steamer projects him for 3.6 WAR next year. 7x3 is $21 million. 7x3.6 is $25 million.

Between the Panda & Big Poppy, the BoSox's post game spread will triple in costs. Gonna be some serious grub being mainlined by those 2 mountains.

a 3B that has hit 14 hr 72 RBI on average the last 3 years
335/424/759
he's basically juan uribe

And for so much cheaper he he put up similar power numbers as Panda.... he just needs to learn what a walk is

I hope they arent breaking the bank based off of last season's 3 win season. If they actually look at the full body of work based on WAR, they can see what an unpredictable player they are getting. If the guy is getting paid off last season and next year projections, well, that's a pretty narrow minded use of sabermetrics.
