We do an apps only family Christmas Eve. This years theme is "international". I picked Japan/china. I realize they are two different places...I have to pick one and bring an app from that country.

Hence that's why you use a tempura style, to enhance flavor not mask it.

Ground pork, garlic powder, green onions - mix and spoon into wonton wrappers. Fry or steam. Sauces can be anything from a ginger soy sauce, ponzu sauce, spicy mustard, or sweet and sour or hot and sour. Heck, I will eat the fried ones (I know, you don't like to fry) with just soy sauce.

Live octopus
EDIT: Sorry. Was in OT mode and the absurdity of the mental image I got was too much to resist.

Pan fried dumplings. I could eat them until I pass out. Those things are awesome.

Sushi Yama much? You can't go wrong with that spread.
I need to make my way up there. It has been way too long.
If your family is into raw you could always try a raw beef dish that is easy to make and pretty damn good.
Sirloin steak sliced into paper thin pieces, chopped fried onions, cilantro, and jalepeno marinated in lemon juice. then the dipping sauce is equal parts lemon juice and soy sauce.

Where could I get beef that I would feel ok serving to kids on Xmas eve?
I would hate for them to be sick Xmas morning

Local butcher, Fresh Market, Whole Foods. I've done it with Walmarks and Albertsons beef, as long as it is the newest of the day product. The asus from the lemon works to kill the bacteria, either that or my Asian stomach is just used to it.

Is that Tuna in the middle right? Why is it so bright? That looks like some bad tuna if it is.

Phones tend to pick up reds/pinks in a weird way.
I've noticed that when I post photos of burgers or steaks that are cut open.
My Beef Wellington looked completely rare when I posted it here, and it wasn't as rare as that.
