On 3 downs? There is a 4th down, you know?

They can go for it if they have field position no one is stopping them, why are you trying to make it easier for a team to earn a first down?

How would it be easier to catch a punt than a pass from a QB?

It's not but it just gives the offense more options.

Again, Why are you trying to make it easier for a team to earn a first down?

His idea isn't nearly as crazy as some make it out to be, though it shouldn't count as a reception, of course.

The only thing it would change is punt returners wouldn't let a ball go inside the 10, they'd just catch it every time, that's all.

The funny thing is, the net result of this would make things tougher on the opposing team's offense, not the team punting the ball.

He is trying to say that you could just pooch it 5 yards past the LOS and catch it.

You'd have to have the entire team in the defensive backfield to cover all the area and make a fair catch.

How is that not crazy?

Why is he trying to reward the offense with more options to pick up a first down?

Because it would add more excitement to the punting game. More variables for the return team to deal with. 4th down is an offensive down.

It would basically turn 4th down into rugby.

Not really. Can the punting team's player make a return or advance the ball?

This would make the name football make sense though.

Of course. Or they could fair catch it, nullifying the punting team's ability to catch it.

EDIT- My bad, I thought you meant return team. I say yes, if the punt team catches the ball, they can then advance it. The first punt-completion TD will be a high-water mark in civilization.

What team would ever try that? That would be 100 times more difficult than a pass.

Don't you still have to have the same amount of guys there to guard for a fake punt and pass?

I'm not seeing how this would change things, you still have to guard for the punter throwing the ball.

Again, the net result wouldn't really help the punting team to convert the 4th down.

no.

The only difference you'd see is fair catches and balls being caught at the 2 or 3 yard line. Not ideal, but nowhere near what you're insinuating.

Another bonus. You know, some crazy guy had an idea to add a line on the basketball court a few years ago. Said if you make a bucket from behind this line, you get 3 points! He was burned at the stake, but the guy that stole his idea was a genius!

If you made this rule, then if the punting team dropped the catch of the punt/"reception", that would have to be an incomplete pass, right?
