Cemeteries, why do we have them?

They really are a waste of money and land.
Why do we have them?
When you die, your family pays thousands to bury you in the ground beneath a rock that has your name on it. After one generation, if you are lucky to even get that, no one visits your grave anymore and you'll fade into memory anyway.
It doesn't make sense.
Scruffy wants to be cremated and buried beneath a tree so that he'll become an Ent. Pretty sure that's what happens.

Because many people fear mortality more than anything and refuse to believe they are so meaningless that they could cease to exist; religion and afterlife concepts speak to this.

Well we do need a source for the zombie apocalypse.

I like the historical aspect of really old cemeteries.

They are useful for burying people.

Respect, Tradition. Thats about it. I just want a pine box in the back yard with a nice cross and an after service party for the family.

No kidding?
The question is, why do we bury people?
It's dumb.
Scruffy also thinks it would be cool to have a Viking burial. Put him on a boat and then light it on fire with fire arrows. Would be legit.

FALSE.
The number one thing people fear is public speaking. Two is death.
Carlin had a good bit on the foolishness of cemeteries

Out of respect for those who have passed. People like to have a place to go and grieve, and a cemetary seems more appropriate than an urn in the living room.

All those dude ants and one hoe? Scruffy doesn't share.

so necrophiliacs know where to source their mates?

people are buried in cemeteries for the sake of their loved ones...people need a way to continue to care for their loved ones after passing and being laid to rest in a decent and respectful manner is one way to do that...

It's not like we really have a shortage of land in the US. Especially when, as you said, we are willing to pay a few grand for them to dig a hole and keep it mowed.
That said... I want to be cremated, my ashes mixed in a bucket with concrete, then dropped overboard, gps coordinates noted, my friends maybe come fish by me once or twice while I grow barnacles.

You do realize that will be painful if you are misdiagnosed as being dead? It happens. I read it in Mad Magazine, Oct. edition, 1973. That was also the edition claiming a 12 year-old girl gave birth to a 14 year-old boy. I called bs on that at the time, still do.

Yep, how I want to go out. Very legit.
